Only then did Adel realize she had been holding her breath all this time. The startled gasp quickly turned into hiccups.

“Adel.”

A face so beautiful it could enchant anyone drew close. The voice calling her name again, as if to soothe her, was sweetly tender. A name never gladly called by anyone, as if it were a tribute offered to someone exceedingly precious.

Adel lowered her trembling eyelids. A warm warmth settled upon them.

[This is the timeline separator]

That night, Adel could not return to her room.

It was because if Adel disappeared from sight even for a moment, Valentin would throw a fit almost like a seizure. Even sturdy knights holding him down was useless.

Those groans, the glaring eyes, the gaze persistently chasing only her even with limbs restrained, the mouth dripping with saliva…

Impiously, it was comparable to a madman. The man who was utterly rational and calm when the Grand Duchess was in sight would plummet to that state the moment she vanished.

By then, Butler Hermann first bowed his head, asking her to stay by the Grand Duke’s side for the time being. It was the first obedience Adelheid had ever experienced.

“Long live His Highness the Grand Duke!”

“For the great Ansgar!”

Adel was briefly dazed, then looked out the window below at the loud cheers coming from afar.

In the backyard, groups were gathering in twos and threes to toast the Grand Duke’s resurrection. It seemed they had taken the ceremonial wine meant for the mourners and distributed it freely to the servants.

Everyone seemed excessively merry and joyful.

As if they had forgotten that just yesterday, the Grand Duke was a corpse to be buried in the ground.

People forgot many things all too easily. Fear turned into reverence, and all ominous signs were transformed into Morrig’s miracles. They believed the blessed power dwelling in Ansgar’s land had stayed with the Grand Duke and “frozen” him at the critical moment.

All this change in perception had occurred in just one night. It seemed that now, even if one searched the entire land of Bitzleben, she alone still feared her husband as a revived corpse.

‘Hurry.’

It was the moment when Valentin, who had been clinging to Adel and watching all night, finally fainted into sleep. Adel hurriedly left the room to return to her own, even briefly. She planned to tidy her clothes before he woke and grab a few items to bring back.

Her steps climbing to the northern spire were rushed. The room where the Grand Duchess should stay was originally in the center of the main castle. But the butler had given her an old room in the spire, excusing that the inner chamber, unused for long, needed repairs. She had spent a full three years that way.

The room was somewhat shabby for a lady’s boudoir. The window was a handspan wide, and there was a fireplace with ashes cleared. In the narrow space, there was a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, and a chair, but they seemed pieced together from wherever, with woods of different kinds barely matching.

‘No time to light a fire.’

She skillfully undressed and poured the icy water from the pitcher into a brass basin. She wet a towel and cleanly wiped away the soup stains dried on her body. Adel crouched in front of the wardrobe.

‘Lucky there’s spare underwear and clothes.’

She turned an old chemise inside out and put it on, then rummaged through the wardrobe to pull out a paddingale whose only merit was being clean and slipped it on. Tying the laces alone took a lot of time.

At that moment, the door opened urgently. As Adel turned in panic, covering herself, a shrill voice flew in.

“My lady! Do you know how, how long I’ve been looking for you!”

It was Greta. Her face, paler than ever before, was unfamiliar. She crossed the room in quick steps and grabbed Adel’s forearm hard. She panted as if out of breath and spat out words.

“N-now is not the time for this. You must leave right now, immediately.”

Whether excitement, fear, or terror… The fragments of emotion scattered on Adel’s face only confused her more.

“I don’t understand what you’re saying. Leave?”

“You can’t stay here, my lady. You must leave before that thing wakes up. There’s no time to delay.”

Greta seemed to forget that she was in her chemise. She rummaged through the wardrobe and forcibly pulled a hood over Adel’s head.

With that rough force, Adel’s hair was pulled out messily and disheveled. She frowned, which was rare for her.

“What do you mean, nursemaid. The situation changed when the Grand Duke woke up. Going to the monastery was what I wanted too, but…”

“No. That’s not it…”

Greta cut her off and muttered desperately. Her body trembled so much that the mashed sounds on her tongue scattered unclearly. It was almost like talking to herself.

“It recognized you, my lady. That thing… it came to swallow you after all.”

“What on earth are you talking about?”

“T-time is up. There’s really no way to stop it now. What did I say? Yes. You must watch the shadow very carefully. Because it will move on its own…”

“Nursemaid. Why are you suddenly acting so scary? Shadow?”

Greta seemed to forget Adel was right in front of her. The old woman’s lips, white with fear, suddenly opened.

“The Dragon of Bitzleben will be a cunning, vicious, and enchanting beast…”

The rest was known to any northerner. It was that famous a story in Bitzleben. A folktale passed from parents to children to warn those entering the forest, layered with time.

The Dragon of Bitzleben will be a cunning, vicious, and enchanting beast. It will freely manipulate shadows, slyly hide among people, mimic their actions, and imitate their language,

But the speechless beasts will recognize it first.

Suddenly, a chilling chicken crow came from beyond the window.

“It’s awake. It’s looking for you, my lady.”

As Greta’s face twisted in terror, a clamor arose downstairs similarly.

It was from the window left open for ventilation. The voices of the servants in the backyard leaked over the high spire.

“Damn it, what’s all this commotion?”

“Suddenly going crazy. Did the animals all lose it together or what…”

“The horses were like that too. Is a wolf pack passing nearby?”

The murmuring voices grew louder bit by bit. The merry atmosphere was breaking. The stable horses stamped their front hooves in fear, chickens let out shrill screams. Sounds that should only be heard just before dawn tore through the midnight again. The dogs’ barking was tremendous.

“…”

A chilling wind blew in. It slammed open the half-open window fiercely. At that instant, what she thought was the wind humming sounded a bit louder.

Uuuu, uuu.

It was like a sinister gust, or a prisoner’s death rattle, or a scream filled with pain.

“No, no…”

Greta, face pale as paper, covered her ears. She collapsed, curled up, and rocked back and forth. Like someone enveloped in extreme anxiety. Adel wrapped her hands around Greta’s shoulders.

“Greta, please snap out of it. Why are you suddenly like this?”

Adel wrapped her hands around Greta’s shoulders. Unexplained fear tended to spread easily like a plague. It was the moment when even Adel was slowly being eroded by Greta’s emotions.

Thump thump. The sound of urgently knocking on the old wooden door. Adel jerked her head up.

“Your Highness. Are you inside?”

It was Hermann. There was only one reason the butler would seek her so desperately.

“His Highness the Grand Duke is calling for you. It seems you must come quickly.”

His voice was thick with urgency he couldn’t fully erase. Adel was flustered and momentarily lost for words. Immediately after, the sound of mercilessly pounding on the boudoir door came again.

Where had his usual calm demeanor been sold cheaply? The urging voice was quite hurried.

“Your Highness. If you are inside, please, hurry…”

“Please wait a moment. I haven’t, fully dressed yet.”

Adel hurriedly tidied her appearance. She tied laces where her hands reached and tucked the unreachable parts inside the clothes. Greta was in no state to help, so she did everything alone.

Throwing on a worn shawl and opening the door, Hermann stood there, his face halved in the meantime. His complexion was very pallid.

He made an excessively relieved face the moment he saw Adel.

“Thank you…”

Not knowing how to react to a thank you she received for the first time in her life without doing anything, she hesitated, and Hermann changed his expression to urge her.

“You must hurry. Excuse me, but since waking, he has been shouting only Your Highness’s name…”

Adelheid!

Just then, the Grand Duke’s howling clearly split the night. It was a horrific scream that didn’t feel like a human voice. Chills ran down her spine the moment she heard it. Surprised if that voice was really her husband’s, she widened her eyes, and the butler nodded with a grave face.

Adel hurried down the spire and ran through the corridor. Some people passed and greeted her, but she had no mind to return the greetings.

In front of the Grand Duke’s bedroom, it was crowded with gathered servants and soldiers, no room to step.

“Butler! And… Her Highness the Grand Duchess.”

“Her Highness has come!”

Starting with someone recognizing her, a crack formed among the people standing seamlessly.

People twisted their bodies to make way for her to pass. After repeating that a few times, Adel was finally pushed into the room as if spat out from the crowd.

“…”

The room was a complete mess.

Porcelain and dishes, shards of broken glass windows scattered everywhere, the thick wooden table broken in half and lying about. Spilled vases and soaked carpets, torn curtains and burst pillowcases lay strewn in places.

Adel’s gaze moved slowly, crawling.

And finally.

“Adel.”

Her eyes met the golden pupils staring straight at her.

My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband

This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.

The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.

They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.

In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.

When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.

She makes his life a living hell.

And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.

Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!

Intro

Dong Xia lost her memory.

Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”

Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.

…

The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.

She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.

Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.

No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!

Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂

*

Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.

The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.

In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.

The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.

And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.

Notes:

1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.

2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
