It was Greta who came down the stairs. Adel instinctively brightened, then suddenly looked up the staircase. If the maids realized she’d been standing here, they might think she’d deliberately eavesdropped.

Seeing this, Greta—though weary—smiled faintly.

“The others always scatter the moment I approach.”

“Is that so?”

“What are you doing here? You’ll be overwhelmed receiving mourners starting tomorrow, yet you’re not resting.”

“I was just about to head up.”

“Go straight to your room and don’t wander off. I’ll bring you a light snack.”

Greta yawned widely as she descended the stairs. Adel felt both gratitude and guilt toward her.

Even after being exiled all the way to this desolate north, Greta still looked after Adel’s meals and sleeping arrangements after finishing her own grueling daily chores, with no one else caring for her.

Sometimes, like sewer rats sharing warmth, they even slept together in the same bed.

Of course, their relationship wasn’t purely positive.

The more Greta shielded and protected Adel, the worse Adel’s reputation became. The maids believed Adel was overly shy and used Greta to push them away. They even mistook her for an arrogant woman who hadn’t the slightest intention of adapting to her new surroundings.

Though this prejudice was utterly absurd, Adel never actively clarified things or changed her behavior—because whenever she tried to speak with another maid, Greta would flare up in fury.

‘I’ve told you again and again! You mustn’t trust anyone—you never know when trouble might strike!’

‘I wasn’t trusting them. But…’

‘You’ve already been bewitched, bewitched I tell you! Especially watch out for Housekeeper Margaret—she’s one of Grand Duke Ansgar’s people. Who knows how things might turn? You’d be better off aligning yourself with Duke Oscar.’

…Could Greta have foreseen this would happen? Adel followed her down a few steps and caught her sleeve.

“Greta.”

“Yes?”

She’d called out, but seeing Greta’s visibly annoyed expression, the words stuck in her throat.

“Well… I just…”

Truthfully, she needed someone to confide in—someone to share her worries about what lay ahead, Oscar’s cryptic remarks, and the swirling rumors surrounding Valentin’s death…

But Greta already looked exhausted enough without such burdens. Was it right to add to her troubles?

As Adel’s silence stretched, Greta frowned slightly.

“Whatever is the matter with you now, miss?”

“It’s nothing. I just… feel guilty for making you do all the hard work alone…”

That was all she could manage to say. Greta blinked once, then gave a small, quiet smile.

“Out of the blue?”

“Once the funeral ends, I’ll be leaving for the convent right away. If I don’t say it now, I’ll miss my chance.”

“…You’re leaving immediately?”

“I’m discussing arrangements with the butler. Barring any complications, that’s what will happen. Widows who lose their husbands in war are routinely sent to convents.”

Adel paused briefly, glancing at Greta’s expression.

“I don’t want you following me all the way to the convent. The butler said he’d return my dowry once funeral rites are complete. It’s only three hundred gold pieces—but… I’ll give it all to you.”

Adel trailed off, her cheeks flushing. Even upon reflection, her dowry was pitiful—so meager it was practically shameful. She could understand why the Ansgars called it a fraudulent marriage.

Just as Greta opened her mouth to speak after a brief pause—

“A convent?”

Adel whirled around at the sudden voice from behind. Greta hurried down the remaining stairs and knelt.

“Your Grace.”

“Her Highness is leaving for a convent? I wasn’t aware.”

“…”

“Now that I’m to become the new head of the house, are there matters occurring within this household that even the head doesn’t know about?”

“…Of course, I should have informed you.”

Adelheid fumbled for excuses.

“I’ve been transferring my duties to other maids one by one, and once that’s settled, I intended to seek your approval.”

“Do you really think I’d believe that excuse, Adel? I know you’re always ready to run away.”

His interrogation was sharp. To hide her shrinking fear, Adel widened her eyes and spoke clearly.

“It’s not an excuse. I’ve genuinely been busy overseeing the funeral arrangements these past few days…”

“Greta, was it? How remarkably free you seem, ma’am. You should be attending to the Grand Duchess—she hasn’t eaten yet.”

Oscar abruptly cut her off, nodding toward Greta. Adel’s face instantly paled as she grasped his implication. Though veiled, it was clearly an order to leave.

“But, Your Grace—”

When Greta hesitated, he pressed again.

“Do you truly think I’d do something improper in the hallway? Hmm? Not while my brother’s body lies right there.”

Adel let out a breathless sigh. His audacity was staggering—after all, just days ago in this very corridor, he’d challenged her as if she weren’t even his sister-in-law…

Caught in this sudden standoff, Greta glanced anxiously between Adel and Oscar, clearly unsure what to do.

Oscar crossed his arms, looking down at her with unwavering resolve. Adel bit her lip. Making a scene here would only attract unwanted attention.

‘This isn’t some deserted corridor like last time…’

She reluctantly nodded in permission.

“Go ahead. I’ll stay here. If you see any guards, send them this way.”

“…Then I’ll be right back.”

Adel watched Greta’s retreating figure with desperate eyes. At that look, Oscar couldn’t suppress a quiet chuckle, and Adel instinctively stepped back a few paces.

Her excessive wariness made everything she did seem foolish and endearing to Oscar. Her naive belief that a few guards could change anything was almost charming.

As he drew closer, the anxious woman’s delicate features froze. The more tense she became, the deeper Oscar’s smile grew.

“…”

Despite her rigid demeanor, Adel was strikingly beautiful. When she’d first arrived in Bitzleben at seventeen, she’d been utterly unremarkable—but with each passing year, she’d blossomed like a flower nourished by time.

Perhaps the frigid northern air suited her constitution, or perhaps it was something else entirely…

Now, just the sight of those dewy eyes turned toward him made his chest ache.

“You won’t be going to the convent.”

“I don’t understand. It’s already decided. The butler said everything will follow proper law and procedure…”

“Having grown up in the prosperous south, your ignorance of northern customs is understandable. Do you know why the Bavarians call us barbarians?”

Adel’s eyes widened at his cryptic question. Why? Because of the frozen wastelands, the monsters endlessly assaulting the walls, the wild tribes who’d settled this land and carved it out with blood—people who’d never known abundance and thus clung fiercely to whatever they possessed, even in death.

In that instant, Adelheid grasped his meaning—and her face turned deathly pale.

“You can’t mean…”

“In the north, it’s still legally recognized that a man may take his deceased brother’s wife. It may be an archaic custom, but I find it rather appealing.”

Oscar’s narrow, serpent-like eyes slowly raked over Adel—devouring her from head to toe with a gaze that was base, sinister, crude, and utterly intent.

“I’ll grant you ample time to mourn until the funeral ends.”

“…”

“After that, Adelheid, you’ll need to decide what’s best for your survival.”

[This is the timeline separator]

‘He’s mad.’

Adel sprang to her feet, unable to contain her agitation. She paced restlessly around the reception room once more.

Oscar’s intentions were clear—and appallingly impudent.

‘He plans to propose. He’ll corner me until I have no choice but to accept.’

She was already bound by marriage vows to Valentin. Morrig regarded divorce as one of the gravest sins, so whether alive or dead, her husband could only ever be Valentin.

She’d sooner be buried alive with him in Ansgar’s underground crypt.

Yet now she was expected to accept another man—her late husband’s own brother…

‘He’s lost his mind. What on earth is he thinking…!’

Long ago, during the endless monster invasions, such customs may have been necessary to preserve bloodlines—but Adelheid had been raised under southern suns. Though her upbringing hadn’t been gentle, she couldn’t possibly comprehend the harshness of the north.

Such blatant immorality made Adel’s lips tremble.

‘He’ll burn in hell. Morrig will never forgive this.’

Terror engulfed her body in an instant. Adel gnawed her fingertips until they bled, oblivious to the pain. Though she’d always scrupulously upheld propriety—partly because criticism easily unnerved her—now she couldn’t possibly keep her composure.

“Your Grace.”

She jerked her head up, reflexively hiding her hands. Lost in thought, she hadn’t noticed the door opening.

“W-what is it?”

Had he seen her biting her nails? She cautiously studied old Hermann’s face, but the butler met her gaze with his usual impassive expression.

“It’s time for the final prayer. By dawn, His Grace will be laid to rest in the crypt.”

“Are the priests already here?”

“Yes. Word just arrived that their carriage passed through the main gate. Your Grace must maintain dignity and remain present until the very end.”

“I understand. But, um…”

Hermann, having delivered his message, paused at the door.

“Speak.”

Tomorrow morning, once the funeral rites were formally concluded, Oscar would ascend as the new Grand Duke.

‘And then he’ll make that absurd proposal.’

There would be no turning back. She had to find a way to escape Ansgar territory before then.

Adel bit her lip. Asking Hermann for an escape route would be the easiest solution—but whether she could trust him was another matter entirely.

“…”

Hermann belonged to a family that had served the Ansgars for generations. Between a Grand Duchess viewed as deceitful and the Duke’s own blood, his loyalty was obvious. If she shared her plan and Oscar found out? She might lose even this last chance to flee.

Adel swallowed hard.

“…It’s nothing. I must’ve been nervous, that’s all.”

At her words, Hermann raised one eyebrow slightly, as if unimpressed.

“Then prepare yourself.”

Shortly after Hermann left, the horn atop the keep sounded long and low. Priests entered the reception room to begin the all-night vigil. The final night would be spent in solemn prayer for the departed soul.

Adel knelt at the prepared altar, her long veil trailing behind her.

‘I’ll slip away in the chaos at dawn. If I can just reach the Regenbach Forest… I’ll find my way.’

But trouble struck in the dead of night.
