Was I frowning? She gently touched her own brow. Her mood had indeed settled, and she had even forced a smile to hide it—but apparently, it hadn’t worked.

In truth, thinking about it now, it had always been like this. Valentin seemed to possess an almost supernatural sensitivity when it came to anything concerning her.

“I’m…”

Adel had intended to say she was fine, that nothing was wrong, and to thank him for worrying. But her lips refused to obey her thoughts. Besides, the ‘Dragon’ was hardly the right confidant for confessing the petty insecurities of a human.

Adel chewed her lip in thought but ultimately could do nothing but smile once more.

“It wasn’t anything serious.”

“…Really?”

“Yes. Actually, there’s something urgent I need to discuss with you—would it be alright if we moved somewhere more private for a moment?”

“Of course. A tailor… person is supposed to arrive soon, so going to your room would be fine.”

Valentin raised his right eyebrow slightly, as if displeased, yet his smile and tone remained as gentle as ever.

“Let’s go.”

He strode ahead up the stairs with perfect posture. The slight unnatural stiffness he’d shown over the past few days—after training knights relentlessly at the drill ground—had now vanished completely.

When they entered the room, the maids were in the midst of decorating it for the upcoming New Year. Adel gently gave them instructions as they placed branches of yew berries into vases.

“Could you all step out for just a moment?”

“Of course, Your Highness. Oh—but the seamstress should be arriving shortly. What shall we do?”
