A wooden bathtub was filled to the brim with steaming hot water. Fragrant flower petals and herbs were poured over its surface. Adel was gently nudged into the tub by the bustling maids.

At first, she was flustered by this unfamiliar experience, but as she sank deep into the hot water, her tangled thoughts instantly melted away.

She let out a contented sigh. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d enjoyed such luxury—it might even be the first since arriving in the north.

Once her bath was finished, the maids unfolded a fresh new dress for her. It was a beautiful green velvet gown, embroidered with exquisite golden thread. Adelheid’s eyes widened at the unexpected gift.

“It’s only something hastily prepared for now.”

“We heard His Highness even sent someone to the neighboring village because it was so hard to find a dress worthy of Your Highness right away. Since it isn’t custom-made, it might be a bit large for you…”

The maids’ tones were polite as they watched Adel’s expression, clearly anxious not to offend someone of high status—genuine nervousness, not feigned.

Adel quickly realized the maids looked unfamiliar. Apparently, after dismissing many servants for poor conduct, new ones had been hired; these must have been the replacements.

“Do you… perhaps dislike it?”

At their worried question, Adel shook her head gently from side to side.

“I like it very much.”

“We’re glad to hear that. Then let us help you put it on.”

The maids deftly dressed Adel in undergarments and the gown. Adel barely suppressed a gasp as she examined herself in the mirror. The skirt flowed softly like gentle waves, and the embroidery around the bodice was too delicate for words.

She carefully brushed her fingertips against the velvet dress. She had never owned anything made of such expensive fabric before.

Even when she occasionally inherited Charlotte’s old clothes, the costly fabrics had always been pilfered by maids, leaving her only with plain, coarse garments.
