Adel decided to gratefully accept Miriam’s kindness.

She had noticed that having curtains hung was a kind of special favor, but if she refused even this, Miriam would clearly find some way to reject her proposal outright.

Lena, who belatedly learned the situation, grumbled about how much trouble they were causing, yet ultimately packed her bags and followed Adel to the priests’ quarters.

The previously decently spacious room became so crowded with the addition of two more beds that there was hardly room to stand.

Just as they were nearly finished unpacking, Miriam brushed her hands together and asked,

“Where did you store the supplies and medicinal herbs?”

“I’ll show you.”

Adel stepped forward enthusiastically.

They carefully inspected each supply crate, verifying the quantities of items and compiling a list of essentials to request during the next resupply.

They were so busy they barely managed to eat more than a few spoonfuls of soup, but that was preferable.

Whenever she stayed still even for a moment, useless thoughts would flood her mind—thoughts of Valentin, or Father Padre….

“We might run short on bandages. And stretchers aren’t sufficient either. But with this much, we should last a month.”

A month.

Adel unconsciously bit down on her fingernails.

Each time she truly grasped the scale of this expedition, an unavoidable sense of helplessness washed over her.
