She scanned the knight’s back with anxious eyes.

What could have happened again? Something big enough to delay the schedule? Perhaps sensing the anxiety in her gaze, the knight hurriedly waved both hands to reassure her.

“It’s not a big deal. It’s just that the downhill path ahead seems to continue like this. I came to tell you not to be startled.”

“A downhill path?”

“Yes. The frozen ground has thawed, creating mud. So, as we reroute, we’ll pass through a slightly steeper mountainside. But we’ll arrive that much faster.”

The knight, who had answered politely, stepped back a few paces from the window as if inviting her to check for herself.

Adel, shifting her hips to sit close to the window, momentarily lost her words at the wide-open view.

It was a vast basin. Below the downhill path stretched the broad black Regenbach forest, and beyond it lay Ansgar’s territory.

The moment she spotted Ansgar’s castle, perched like an iron wall at the base of the opposite ridge, a groan of relief escaped her involuntarily.

“About two hours ago, I sent a messenger ahead to the castle. If we hurry, you should arrive home by evening.”

The knight explained to her in a slightly more relaxed voice.

In that moment, Adel felt a strange sense of kinship with the knight who had just spoken of “home” mere minutes after mounting his horse. The place he considered “home” was now her home too.

Realizing that, Adel understood that she cared for Ansgar far more deeply than she had thought.

She smiled faintly without taking her eyes off the castle.

“Please hurry.”
