This was the second time the count had mentioned the prophecy in front of Adel. The first had been while thoroughly drunk, a slip of the tongue; the second was now, half-resigned and desperate.

The common thread was that both times, he had avoided meeting her eyes directly, fumbling through his words as though it were some grave sin.

Adel’s sea-green eyes narrowed slightly as she stared fixedly at the count.

She didn’t know what her father was so desperately hiding, but a strong intuition told her that if she didn’t press him now, she might never hear it.

“The prophecy you mentioned—is it the one you received at my birth?”

At her question, as she stepped closer, the count’s shoulders flinched.

“What exactly did it say? I heard something from Greta, but it was so vague and cryptic…”

Besides, she hadn’t been in her right mind at the time. Whatever prophecy she’d heard couldn’t possibly have left a deep impression.
