Adelheid barely managed to answer in a shrinking voice.

“Again, you speak as if atoning. I’ve told you repeatedly, there’s no fault of yours in this marriage.”

Grita’s expression softened at the sight of the shrunken Adelheid. Though she grumbled, Adelheid’s decision was right. If not for this pretense, the Grand Duchess’s reputation would have been even worse.

Every day felt like walking on thin ice.

Grita gathered the ashes from the altar and tried to lighten the mood with a joke.

“I can forgive visiting the temple, but wandering alone without fear… What if you run into the Beast of Vichtleben?”

A faint smile crossed Adelheid’s pale face. Grita seemed in a better mood today.

“Do you think I’m a little child, Nanny? I’ve long passed the age of being frightened by legends.”

“It might not be just a legend, you know. Recently, there have been signs of monsters in the barns. Many sheep have gone missing.”

“Missing sheep?”

“The barn doors are broken, and carcasses eaten out have been found some meters away.”

It was a horrific story, but not unusual in the Vichtleben region. In all four northern regions, including Ansgar, attacks by wild animals were common in winter.

Adelheid shuddered slightly, recalling the dead cow she had accidentally seen last winter.

“A terrible thing. No one was hurt, were they?”

“The priest is diligently consecrating… But be careful. Without me, always have a guard with you.”

She nodded lightly.

“I was just being troublesome today. I didn’t know when the prayers would end.”
“Enough, let’s head back. Your hands are freezing. Are you going to see the steward next?”

“Yes.”

For several months now, Adel had been helping the steward. As soon as he discovered she could read and write fluently, he had her organize old ledgers.

It seemed that Count Raihenau had harbored a vain hope that she might develop healing abilities late. Hence, until she was fifteen, Adel received the same education as Charlotte.

Not only reading and writing but also ancient Arian language, embroidery, poetry, dance, and etiquette…

‘It must be because of the prophecy the Count received when I was born. I don’t know the details, but there must be a reason there.’

In any case, it was fortunate she had something to do. If she didn’t have even this modest skill, she would have been treated no better than vermin.

Even now, the old retainers brazenly criticized Adel as the woman who deceived Ansgar. Though she was a victim of the fraudulent marriage, no one deeply considered her perspective.

To the Northerners, Adel was nothing more than a defective luxury.

‘They must have expected a powerful healer as their mistress, not an ordinary woman like me.’

Vichtleben was always short of healers, especially Ansgar, where people were often attacked by monsters. In winter, people suffering from frostbite often had limbs amputated.

Amidst this, the news of the daughter of Raihenau and the Grand Duke’s marriage stirred all of Ansgar. Particularly, the household knights, prone to minor injuries, had high hopes.

This optimistic outlook quickly turned to anger when it became clear the expensively acquired Grand Duchess was utterly useless.

Fortunately, Ansgar’s old steward was a fair man. Since she started helping with work, the quality and quantity of her meager supplies improved slightly.

“Your Highness, I’ll take the shortcut back to the kitchen. Is it alright if I go ahead?”

“Sure. See you later.”

Adel watched Grita hurry away before quickly moving down the right corridor.

“…”

But after just a few steps, she stopped abruptly. An unwelcome figure appeared at the end of the corridor.

It was Oscar, Valentin’s younger half-brother.

‘I heard he was on campaign because of womanizing, but when did he return? I heard nothing about his whereabouts until this morning.’

She always found him uncomfortable. Despite her wary look, Oscar closed the distance and spoke with a grin.

“Adelheit. Are you returning from the temple?”

His greasy gaze scanned her from head to toe.

“No matter how fervently you pray, my brother won’t know.”

“…”

“For me? Did you pray for me, too?”

Adel bit her lip uncomfortably, knowing any response would sound wrong. Sending Grita ahead had been a mistake.

“That dress…”

Feeling Oscar’s persistent gaze, Adelheit pulled her worn sleeve over her hand. She had forgotten to mend it due to recent busyness.

Oscar’s expression darkened. Gritting his teeth, he uttered,

“If it were me, I wouldn’t treat you like this.”

Adel looked around anxiously for a maid or guard. Oscar, amused by her actions, smirked.

“The guards won’t come.”

“Please, maintain your dignity, Your Grace.”

“How much more dignity should I maintain?”

Her plea for decorum only seemed to amuse Oscar further.
Despite her pleas, the man, having stepped closer, grasped Adel’s slender wrist. Startled, Adel pushed him away.

“There are eyes watching… I am your brother’s wife. Please…”

“Why should I consider you my sister-in-law when you’ve never spent a night with my brother?”

At his audacious words, Adelheit’s face turned deathly pale.

When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman

“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.

Was I nothing but his substitute to you from beginning to end?”
