Though it was winter, the day was clear and perfect for riding. The two raced side by side, taking turns leading and falling back.

They exchanged no words, yet merely riding the same path made them feel together.

“Hold on.”

Lucas reined in his horse first and pulled out a map and compass from his coat. They had already strayed far from the main road, and not a soul was in sight.

“We’re almost there—shall we tie the horses up on that hill for now?”

“Alright.”

They tethered their horses to a tree atop a small hill and gave them water and feed. Lucas’s horse, a famed steed that had seen battlefields, remained vigorous even on rough terrain, and Serena’s mount from Duke Astel’s estate moved in perfect harmony with its rider.

“Just a short distance from Astel, yet… the road conditions are terrible.”

“According to the map, this was supposed to be a maintained road—likely ruined during the war.”

On closer inspection, it wasn’t just the road that was damaged. Though the trees were bare due to winter, there were hardly any trees left in the area at all.

“The tree we tied our horses to earlier had all its branches cut off and its bark stripped away.”

“It seems our destination isn’t far.”

Lucas replied bitterly, then gathered what dry grass he could find nearby, struck a flint to start a small fire, and warmed water from his canteen.

“After war passes through, trees don’t thrive. Without firewood or food… the land only grows more desolate.”

“Yes. People freezing and starving can’t possibly preserve trees for some distant future.”
