While Serena was recovering from a high fever, Lucas pushed himself even harder.

He could only fall asleep when his body collapsed from exhaustion, and if he wasn’t doing something, his restlessness became unbearable.

“Your Highness, you mustn’t overexert yourself. Don’t you have another council meeting in a few days?”

Recently, Lucas looked even more worn out than he had on the battlefield. Even Cedric had grown genuinely worried and tried to dissuade him several times.

“I have finished preparing the analytical report on the Astel territory…”

“Is that really the issue right now?”

His low voice carried no strength at all.

“Your Imperial Highness the Crown Princess is unwell, but that doesn’t excuse neglecting Your Imperial Highness the Crown Prince’s duties.”

“I have never shirked my role or responsibilities.”

“But you’re pushing yourself too hard. Don’t you realize that your health is of utmost importance to this empire?”

Though every word was true, the heart wasn’t so easily swayed. The court physician had said Serena had passed the worst and was resting, yet Lucas kept recalling their last argument and couldn’t bear to look at matters concerning Astel.

“Clearly, when I saw the Crown Princess on the first night of the month, she seemed perfectly fine. But… she turned away coldly without even hearing me out.”

At first, he’d been angry at Serena’s attitude. So even when he heard she was ill, he assumed it was just an excuse.

“I was proud of her for bringing prosperity to Astel. I thought announcing this to the entire council and using her methods to save more people would be a chance to showcase her abilities.”

Above all, he believed she’d be pleased if he proposed applying Astel’s growth—something she took pride in—to the empire’s frontier regions to aid the common folk.
