The Crown Princess’s residence had prepared a more lavish dinner than usual, but instead of the awaited Lucas, a servant arrived to say the council meeting was running long.

“I see. It can’t be helped if it’s council business.”

She had already been awkward and troubled at the thought of spending the night alone with Lucas, so his absence due to official duties—of all reasons—was perfectly convenient.

“His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince asked that you not feel too disappointed and said he would arrive around ten.”

Yet Serena had judged too hastily. Though Lucas couldn’t avoid missing dinner, he had no intention of forfeiting their rare time alone.

“…I suppose so.”

After the servant bowed and departed, Serena murmured to herself. Her maids had spent the whole day fervently preparing for the banquet, and though she’d told them it was excessive, now that the guest of honor wouldn’t come, her spirits sank.

“Anna, you prepared a great deal of food for tonight’s dinner, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“I only need a few dishes—serve them simply in the sitting room of my chambers, and share the rest among the palace staff. Don’t wait for me; let them eat while it’s still warm.”

Anna nodded. Serena’s kindness remained unchanged from her days at Astel to now.

Normally, meals for the highborn were prepared in double or triple portions so servants could share the leftovers, but Serena always set aside her portion first and ensured everyone ate together while the food was still warm.

“I’ll eat lightly and rest a bit.”

“Yes, that would be best.”

Seeing Serena’s weary expression, Anna bowed and withdrew. Soon after, cheers erupted from the first floor, audible even to Serena.
