Serena’s resolute words caused Lucas’s expression to twist sharply.

“What did you say?”

Any man in this world would be offended to hear his fiancée say death was preferable to marriage—and he was none other than the Imperial Crown Prince.

“Are you saying marrying me is worse than dying?”

Lucas’s eyes burned fiercely as he pressed Serena with a low, growling voice.

“That’s not what I meant. I’m simply unsuited for marriage, and Your Highness would be better off with a more fitting partner—that’s what’s best for everyone.”

“And who decided that? Isn’t it always you, Serena, with your extreme views?”

Lucas’s dark eyes looked down at Serena, making no effort to hide his displeasure.

“Isn’t it partly because Your Highness refuses to listen to anything you don’t like?”

Serena glared back at him without an inch of retreat. No matter how strong Lucas appeared outwardly, it wasn’t easy to erase first impressions.

“My stubbornness? What about yours?”

Indeed, people never change, do they?

“Insisting on nullifying our engagement—that’s your stubbornness right there.”

The boy who had glared at Serena during their engagement ceremony with an obstinate, fierce gaze still bore that same look clearly on his face.

“It’s a sensible proposal—and a compromise.”

“Exactly. That’s precisely your stubbornness.”

Lucas, too, recalled the past as he looked at Serena’s face now. Even though he had long since grown much taller than her, Serena showed neither intimidation nor caution.

“Just your own ill-mannered obstinacy.”

Instead, with her blue eyes fixed firmly on him, she seemed to say that no matter how much Lucas had matured, he remained exactly the same.

“You may think whatever you like.”

Serena remained perfectly composed. Seeing this, Lucas felt an inexplicable surge of irritation.

“You haven’t changed at all.”

“No.”

At those words, Lucas clenched his teeth. He disliked how reality differed so starkly from the reunion he’d imagined—and how Serena’s gaze still seemed to dismiss him.

“I’ve changed. Can’t you see that clearly?”

His pitch-black eyes stared silently at Serena for a moment. Yes, he truly had changed—not merely from aging or growing taller. His gaze was now different from the boy Serena remembered.

“I’ve grown strong enough to take even the most willful fiancée wherever I please.”

With a faint, peculiar smile, Lucas stepped closer and grasped Serena’s wrist again. He didn’t tighten his grip, yet she couldn’t easily shake him off.

“I could just sling you over my shoulder and carry you straight to the Imperial Palace.”

Lucas murmured confidently.

“Is that so?”

Serena abruptly jerked her arm, and Lucas’s hand fell away. A flicker of bewilderment crossed his face as he stared at his own hand, which had come loose far too easily.

No matter how sturdy a noble lady might be, a woman shouldn’t be able to shake off his grip so effortlessly.

“Your Highness has certainly grown stronger. But I, too, can protect myself.”

“Even so, you won’t change my mind.”

Seeing Lucas’s unexpected persistence, Serena couldn’t help but sigh. She was already busy with the harvest season in her domain—why did her disinterested fiancé have to appear now and cause such a nuisance?

“Neither will I.”

“It seems we’ve reached a conclusion.”

Lucas looked down at Serena with a twisted smirk.

Then, grabbing her wrist, he swiftly tried to pull her into his arms. But what met his chest wasn’t soft warmth—it was Serena’s elbow striking him squarely in the solar plexus.

“……!”

“Ugh!” Lucas doubled over, gasping roughly after taking the full impact.

“Hah! What on earth—”

His face contorted completely, yet he couldn’t bring himself to admit aloud that he’d been hurt by his own fiancée. Barely managing to stand upright, he forced a strained air of composure.

“Y-you’re just being adorably petulant.”

Though his solar plexus throbbed and his head pounded, Lucas grinned stubbornly through sheer willpower.

“I was merely protecting myself.”

Serena was utterly unaware she’d just resorted to violence. Lucas, the victim, was desperately pretending nothing had happened, and to Serena, it had felt like nothing more than a light tap.

“I understand. After six lonely years since the engagement ceremony, you may blame me for my neglect as much as you like.”

Lucas spoke with feigned magnanimity, but Serena was preoccupied with brushing the wrinkles from her crumpled clothes.

“No matter how often you complained of my neglect to the Holy See or the Imperial Court, it’s enough that I still want you.”

His arrogant words rang unmistakably clear. Serena lifted her chin.

“So you finally see me.”

Lucas wasn’t a fool. He knew Serena held no interest in him and understood that their engagement felt like shackles to her. His words tasted bitter.

“My resolve won’t waver.”

A breeze drifted through the open window, tousling Lucas’s black hair slightly. Beneath it, his dark eyes gazed at Serena with desperate intensity.

“All this time… I’ve waited only for the day I could stand proudly before you.”

Lucas spoke sincerely. Though she hadn’t wanted to know, Serena could now see that truth in his eyes.

“I didn’t send a single letter not because I was indifferent to you. I feared that if I thought of you—or worse, if you ever replied—I wouldn’t be able to hold myself back.”

“Hold back? I don’t understand.”

“From coming to see you, of course. Didn’t I already say so?”

Lucas retorted petulantly.

“I hated being smaller than you. And I hated even more the thought of standing before you again in that state.”

Serena had never placed much importance on their engagement ceremony. Calling the Crown Prince “small” had merely been a retort to his provocation, and whether he was tall or short had always seemed irrelevant to her.

Yet she never imagined that one remark would drive Lucas to train relentlessly for six long years until he stood before her like this.

“Your Highness, what I said at the engagement ceremony wasn’t meant like that.”

“Then what did you mean?”

In truth, her words had held no real meaning. But his pitch-black eyes were fixed on her with such earnestness.

Faced with the gaze of a man who’d charged forward with a single purpose, she couldn’t bring herself to say it had meant nothing at all.

“It’s fine anyway. Now, I stand before you prouder than anyone else.”

A faint flush of embarrassment spread across Serena’s cheeks.

“On lonely nights, I’d look up at the sky. I’d think of you while gazing at the moon. Even on the hardest days, that gave me the will to train again the next day.”

Who could have guessed that one careless remark to that bratty little boy would give him a goal—and drive him to appear before her after six years of relentless training?

“At first, my only goal was simply to grow taller than you. But as I looked at the moon each night and thought of you, I began to want to become the strongest man on this continent.”

Serena had merely snapped back at her diminutive fiancé out of annoyance—but that single sentence had reshaped Lucas’s entire life.

“Your Highness, I…”

“The only reward I desire is this: to become the strongest man and take you as my wife.”

Lucas’s burning eyes didn’t understand—precisely why that was impossible.

“And recently, after the battle ended, I realized something.”

It was only natural for the Crown Prince to train. But Lucas’s training had been different.

He’d set aside his title and fought to grow stronger as a man. His presence on the battlefield, his participation in combat—all of it had been for this reason.

“Now, I believe I have the right to come for you.”

Seeing Lucas so utterly serious, Serena’s thoughts grew tangled.

“Well? Don’t I deserve my reward now?”

Lucas asked in a low, calm voice, though he couldn’t hide his nervousness. This only made Serena feel even more awkward.

His eyes, wide and hopeful like a giant puppy awaiting praise, made her feel as though she were the villain.

“Am I still lacking? If you think so, I’ll return to the battlefield immediately and train even harder.”

Small skirmishes constantly flared along the western borders of the Empire—but it wasn’t a place suited for the Crown Prince. Besides, Lucas didn’t appear to need further training at all.

“Your Highness doesn’t need that.”

“Then give yourself to me.”

Forgetting the blow to his solar plexus, Lucas took another step forward and grasped Serena’s hand. Had his large hand not trembled slightly, his solar plexus might have survived intact.

“Marry me, Serena.”

As the distance between them narrowed, she truly felt how much he’d grown. His low voice resonated just above her forehead.

“You’re the only person I’ve ever wanted.”

Lucas’s mind briefly flashed to the pile of marriage proposals stacked on his desk. The endless stream of offers meant nothing to him. Only Serena, standing before him now, appeared to him as a woman.

His breath trembled faintly. When Serena remained silent, he gathered his courage and slowly moved his lips toward her forehead.

But due to his excessive nervousness, his warm breath tickled her skin before his lips could even touch.

“Oh!”

Instinctively, Serena let out a flustered gasp, slapped his chest, and turned her back to him.

“Ha….”

Just where did that petite, fair hand draw such strength from? Lucas barely managed to suppress the urge to clutch his own chest.

His pride stung—but honestly, when Serena had slapped him, his whole body had nearly staggered.

“Don’t startle me like that.”

Serena’s cheeks burned for no good reason. No matter how hard she tried to see him as that little brat from before, she couldn’t help but tense up when a sturdy man leaned in to kiss her forehead.

“After all, our engagement is void.”

“That’s something I can’t accept.”

His resolve wasn’t so easily shaken.

“But I’ll be careful not to startle you again.”

His throbbing solar plexus and the sting from her slap had awakened his survival instincts. In that moment, Lucas realized clearly: though he had grown stronger, Serena hadn’t grown any weaker.
