At Cedric’s question, Odette’s expression grew slightly guarded.

She must have suspected that, as he had tested her with questions before, this was likely another such attempt.

Especially since, from her perspective, she had just received an ultimatum, making her all the more cautious.

After hesitating a moment, Odette asked,

“Are you asking that… because you’re afraid I might betray you, Elder Brother?”

Cedric, realizing he had been a bit hasty, let out a low hum and pressed his fingers to his brow.

“To clear up any misunderstanding… I have no reason to worry about your betrayal in this situation. I have a far more solid rapport with Walter than you might think.”

“But what if I changed my mind and tried to drive a wedge between Walter and you?”

“That’s something anyone—not just you—could attempt. And the man I know… isn’t the type to fall for such schemes.”

It was confidence that others might call arrogance, but it stemmed from the fact that he and Walter were cut from the same cloth.

Both Walter and Cedric were the sort who listened to others’ words only with half an ear and followed their own judgment regardless of what anyone else said.

Still, Cedric, more than Walter, felt the need to broaden his perspective, so he at least made an effort to listen to others—unlike Walter.

“It’s hard to find someone as willful as that fellow.”

“…That’s true.”

“Exactly. So if Walter ever abandons me, it’ll be his own choice—not because of any urging from you.”
