Walter sat perched on the edge of the bed, quietly gazing at his wife’s face as she lay asleep on her side.

Even with her eyes closed, the faint redness around them betrayed that Odette had been quietly weeping before drifting off.

—”Y-you’re… such… a… terrible person…”

What had it been about again? Had she cried because he made her anxious? No—he must have teased her a bit, making her face flush crimson, and then she started crying, asking how he could possibly say such things.

She looked so adorable and endearing in that moment that he nearly forgot he should comfort her and almost repeated the teasing once more.

Walter had never felt prouder of his ironclad self-control as he did today.

Their first night together—not technically a night, but still—had rendered him far more impulsive and instinct-driven than he’d ever imagined.

And Odette might have handed him divorce papers right to his face on their very wedding day, instead of merely calling him a “terrible person.”
