My Chick Husband (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 16
“Oops…”
Seo Hee was even more flustered by Seok Gu’s unexpected appearance. Kwon Yul, on the other hand, greeted him with an utterly composed expression.
“Grandfather. Were you here?”
“Yes, I was. But what exactly was that you just said, Seo Hee?”
Before Kwon Yul could answer that it was nothing, Seo Hee spoke up first.
“I was just joking—Yul keeps women at such a distance that I made something up on the spot.”
Seo Hee wrapped her right arm around Seok Gu’s shoulder and led the way forward.
“Uncle Park is right there—why bother tidying the flowerbed yourself? You’ll tire yourself out.”
Then, Seo Hee subtly turned her head and mouthed “Sorry.”
Kwon Yul let out a short sigh and followed the two ahead at a slow pace.
“Yul’s mother!”
As soon as Seok Gu entered the house and removed his gloves while calling out, Yeon Hee emerged from the kitchen, wearing a neat apron, hurrying in small steps.
“My mouth feels dry. Bring me something to drink in the study.”
“Yes, Father.”
The moment Seok Gu disappeared into the study, Yeon Hee met Kwon Yul’s eyes and whispered softly.
“Why didn’t you come in last night? When visiting your grandfather’s house, you should wear a shirt, not a hoodie.”
“I didn’t have time—I came with Older Brother Seo Hee.”
“You were with your older brother yesterday? Still, go upstairs to the second floor and change into a shirt. Quickly.”
Kwon Yul nodded, glancing at Seo Hee, expecting her to back him up after her earlier slip-up.
After sending Kwon Yul upstairs, Yeon Hee brewed a fragrant dandelion tea and headed toward the study.
Knock knock—
“Come in.”
With deliberate care in every glance and gesture, Yeon Hee entered the old-fashioned study. Immediately, Seok Gu’s sharp gaze fixed on his only daughter-in-law.
“It’s dandelion tea.”
Just as she placed the bluish-green teapot in front of Seok Gu, who sat with his back to the floor-to-ceiling window, and was about to step away—
“It’s about Yul.”
Hearing her son’s name, Yeon Hee froze mid-bow, eyes wide.
“Yes, Father.”
“Does he have a girlfriend?”
Taken aback by the unfamiliar term, Yeon Hee clasped her hands together and answered.
“No, he doesn’t.”
“According to Seo Hee, he does—and she’s supposed to be quite pretty.”
Yeon Hee wondered if her son had stayed out overnight to seek love advice from Seo Hee.
Yet, since she hadn’t confirmed it herself, she couldn’t outright deny it—or affirm it, either.
If she claimed ignorance, she’d surely be scolded for showing no concern over her precious son. But if she admitted it, she’d inevitably face relentless questioning and nagging about who exactly the girl was.
After a brief moment of hesitation, Yeon Hee answered honestly within the limits of what she knew.
“The only girl around Yul is Jin Bo Ra—a childhood friend he’s studied with since they were young.”
“Jin Bo Ra? You mean the granddaughter from JS Fire & Marine Insurance?”
“Yes. They attended the gifted education program together since childhood.”
At the mention of the gifted program, Seok Gu’s eyes sparkled.
“So you’re saying Bo Ra is the only possible girlfriend for him?”
“That’s correct, Father.”
Pleased by Yeon Hee’s answer, Seok Gu began asking detailed questions—about Bo Ra’s academic record, personality, appearance, her parents’ character, and even the family atmosphere.
“The father’s a vice chairman—I thought he seemed agreeable. What about the mother?”
Though surprised by Seok Gu’s sudden interest, Yeon Hee couldn’t say she didn’t know and confessed honestly.
“Since she’s the only daughter of Dae Sung Construction… she’s both strikingly beautiful and confident.”
“Dae Sung Construction? No wonder she’s so self-assured.”
Hearing that the girl was the sole daughter of a top-three domestic construction firm, Seok Gu’s mind raced.
“We lost touch for a while, but Bo Ra’s mother recently called me after hearing rumors about Yul. She said she wanted them to take classes together.”
“She’s got initiative—I like that.”

With JS Fire & Marine Insurance and Dae Sung Construction in the picture, Seok Gu’s attitude softened considerably.
They’d known each other since childhood, the girl was clearly intelligent, and her family background was impeccable—there was nothing left to consider.
“What’s the contact information?”
“Whose, Father…?”
As if annoyed by her failure to catch on quickly, Seok Gu clicked his tongue.
“Either the mother’s or that girl Bo Ra’s.”
“If the numbers haven’t changed, I have both.”
“Good. Arrange a meeting between Yul and that young lady.”
Yeon Hee’s eyes widened at this sudden request. Seok Gu sighed as if exasperated that he even had to explain this much.
“Shouldn’t Yul be forming a relationship with a young lady from a good family? They’ve known each other since childhood, she’s intelligent, and her family background is excellent. If she’s truly suitable, we should secure an engagement before someone else snatches her up.”
Though taken aback, Yeon Hee couldn’t possibly talk back to her formidable father-in-law—she merely tightened her grip on her clasped hands.
“One marriage into some random family is more than enough, don’t you think?”
Yeon Hee bit back the words she longed to say, pressing her lips tightly shut.
“As you well know, what kind of grandson is Yul to me?”
He was the family’s shining hope, the proud heir—and the sole person who could fulfill the dreams her husband had once failed to achieve.
That was exactly who Kwon Yul was to Seok Gu.
“Sang Hyun is, of course, a Kwon by blood and deserves care—but the Seo grandchildren are different. I intend to leave the majority of my estate solely to Yul.”
Seok Gu then launched into a lengthy explanation of his future plans.
Whenever he emphasized the duties and roles Yeon Hee must fulfill for Kwon Yul’s brilliant future, he resembled someone brandishing a stern whip.
“So what I’m saying is… our top grandson deserves a young lady who’s received elite education—backed by an outstanding family and matching intelligence.”
Though nothing had been confirmed, Seok Gu had already decided the relationship between Kwon Yul and Bo Ra.
“If Yul wishes to date this Bo Ra, it’s your role as his mother to take active steps.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Only after hearing the answer he wanted did Seok Gu finally rise from his seat. He patted his daughter-in-law’s shoulder and offered a benevolent smile.
“For someone as insignificant as you, the only good thing you’ve done for this family is giving birth to Yul. Without him, you’d never have set foot in this house—let alone dreamed of it.”
It was mockery disguised as kindness. Instantly, a chill ran down Yeon Hee’s spine.
Despite bearing two sons, tirelessly supporting her husband, and devoting herself wholeheartedly to her in-laws’ affairs, all she ever received in return was scorn and coldness.
In the old-fashioned study, now empty of Seok Gu, Yeon Hee stood like an outsider, chewing the inside of her mouth until it was raw.
Even with an extravagant feast laid out—mobilizing land, sea, and sky—the atmosphere remained tense.
The weekly family meal at Seok Gu’s house was always the same.
A long monologue from Seok Gu, the family patriarch, and endless praise for Kwon Yul.
The rest of the family watched with resentful glances, while Kwon Yul himself offered only expressionless, textbook-like replies.
Today was no different.
Seok Gu picked up a glossy, savory braised short rib and placed it onto Kwon Yul’s rice bowl as he spoke.
“How’s our top grandson feeling these days?”
“Fine, Grandfather.”
Pleased by Kwon Yul’s crisp reply, Seok Gu beamed with affection.
“If studying gets tiring, shall I have Director Kim prepare some herbal tonic for you?”
“Food is the best medicine. Since Mother takes such good care of me, I don’t think I’ll need any medicine.”
Kwon Yul spoke, hoping his words would reflect well on his mother.
“Even so, you should fortify your body before summer arrives if you’re going to study hard.”
Sensing Seok Gu’s impending lecture would drag on, the perceptive Kwon Yul took a sip of water and replied.
“I’ll gratefully accept it if you have it prepared.”
Having finally gotten the response he wanted, Seok Gu turned his gaze toward Yeon Hee.
“I’ll contact Director Kim. Don’t think about having it delivered—wait there in person until it’s ready and bring it back yourself.”
“Yes, Father.”
Though Yeon Hee folded her hands neatly and agreed, Seok Gu’s nagging showed no sign of ending.
Kwon Yul’s brows began to furrow—he felt entirely responsible for his mother’s distress.
Unable to bear the heavy atmosphere any longer, Seo Hee finally stepped in.
“And what about me, Grandfather?”

Her tone was lightly teasing, as if jealous—but she wasn’t actually asking for tonic. She simply wanted to ease the tension for Yeon Hee and Kwon Yul.
“I get tired too, appearing in court every day, Grandfather.”
“What good is keeping Seo Jung Gil, the successful CEO, if you don’t ask him for help?”
“Oh, come on—how can my stern, scary father at the office compare to my kind and precious grandfather?”
Amused by his granddaughter’s cheekiness, Seok Gu chuckled and offered to have tonic made for her too. Seo Hee brushed it off casually, saying she was just joking.
“Seo Hee, among your fellow bar exam takers…”
“Yes! Grandfather?”
“Was there anyone who passed the first stage in their second year of university?”
“It’s tough to pass the first stage in second year—passing young is already rare, and now that the bar exam system no longer exists, it’s impossible.”
Instantly, the entire family’s attention turned to Seo Hee—everyone knew her careless remark would only prolong Seok Gu’s inevitable speech.
“Exactly! Haha! That’s precisely why our Yul is extraordinary.”
Just as expected, boundless admiration for Kwon Yul poured from Seok Gu’s lips.
“As you know, others live in goshiwons or cram schools—how hard they work! Yul studied diligently during his military service and took all his exams the very week he was discharged.”
Caught in the flood of affection, Seo Hee kept repeating, “Yes, absolutely—he’s incredible!”
“Even before the civil service exam results were announced, I already knew he’d pass. If Yul can’t succeed, then who possibly could?”
Feeling as if his neck were tightly constricted by a tie… Kwon Yul forced down a mouthful of unchewed rice and spoke.
“It was just for experience—I know I’m not ready for the second stage yet.”
He meant to extinguish any false hopes.
“Passing both stages on your first try is truly difficult, Grandfather.”
Though sincere, his words only prompted Seok Gu to offer encouragement.
“If not this year, you can prepare again next year. You still have plenty of time before graduation.”
“The first stage was pure luck. So…”
He wanted to say not to expect anything—but his words fell on deaf ears.
“Of course—our top grandson is so humble. His character is truly number one.”
Seok Gu glanced around the table at his family and launched into Kwon Yul’s well-known elite narrative—once more.
He looked utterly delighted, as if boasting could never be enough.
“Yul, you must enter public service. Become a minister, and if the chance arises, even prime minister. Why not even president?”
It would have been perfect if he’d stopped there…
But Seok Gu couldn’t resist adding what he absolutely shouldn’t have.
“Your father failed to achieve his dreams because he made a spectacle of himself falling in love—that dream now rests on your shoulders, Yul.”
As Seok Gu’s resentful gaze shifted toward Yeon Hee, Kwon Yul turned his body slightly to shield her.
“Yes, Grandfather. I’ll do my best.”
“Good, good. You’re the only one I can truly count on.”
The weighty praise continued until the meal ended.
Had Sang Hyun, the youngest in the family, not chattered away cheerfully, everyone would have suffocated.
Thanks to Sang Hyun—Kwon Yul’s younger brother—playfully begging for a new laptop, the gathering concluded on a lighter note.
“Come to my Seocho-dong office next week if you’re free.”
“Yes, Grandfather.”
As he saw them off, Seok Gu patted Kwon Yul’s solid shoulder and nodded approvingly.
Once in the car, Kwon Yul quickly started the engine and pulled away—as if fleeing from his grandfather’s suffocating gaze.
As he merged onto the four-lane road, a deep sigh escaped through his clenched teeth.
After tapping his sternum with his palm, Kwon Yul spotted a pharmacy and immediately swerved the wheel. He dashed in with his hazard lights on and said,
“Please give me some antacid.”
Inside his wallet, pulled from his back pocket, was an ID card bearing a photo.

The woman snatched his phone and hung up. Looking at his phone wallpaper, she awkwardly changed the subject: “An ancient painting, eh? It looks pretty good, it’s just that the person in the painting looks a bit like me.”
When he heard this, he sarcastically mocked her for being so delusional, completely unaware that, the person in front of him was the reincarnation of Wen Ru, the famous prime minister of Yuan Shun whom he most admired…
