“Father, is there something pleasant going on?”

At Bentley’s question, Oliver closed his book with a faint smile.

“Yes. Something good happened.”

The boy glanced at him, seemingly uneasy, but Oliver offered no further explanation.

‘The princess collapsed.’

It was fortunate he’d stationed one of his subordinates near the ducal residence. He recalled his subordinate’s report, delivered breathlessly around lunchtime.

“Your Grace, it seems the princess collapsed. His Grace the Duke, who had departed for the capital, returned just before dawn looking utterly distraught.”

‘She must have kept it properly.’

After all, regardless of the princess’s preferences, she wouldn’t toss an heirloom doll gifted by her uncle straight into the trash.

‘It was worth the effort of making it.’

The black magic embedded in that doll was a particularly subtle form of curse.

The magic within couldn’t be detected by merely examining the doll itself, because unless both triggers were fulfilled simultaneously, the curse wouldn’t activate—or even leave a trace.

The activation conditions were as follows:

1. A dark mage implants the seed of the curse through physical contact with a specific target.

2. The target then remains in the same room as the cursed object for over an hour.
