Thanks to Luke leaving, Elodie was left alone with Catherine.

An awkward silence lingered between them. Yet, it wasn’t entirely unpleasant.

Catherine kept glancing nervously at Elodie. Whenever Elodie seemed about to speak, Catherine would abruptly turn her head away in flustered agitation.

Reading Catherine’s mind, Elodie gave a faint smile.

Someone might call it an annoying trait, but in Elodie’s view, Catherine’s greatest virtue was that even if she pretended otherwise, she still cared deeply about those she’d once grown fond of. And perhaps, especially so for her daughter-in-law, ‘Elodie Lysianthus.’

She recalled a conversation she’d once had with a maid shortly after first arriving at the ducal mansion.

“The Duchess passed away? He was terribly heartbroken. He even left this estate for quite some time.”

“Wasn’t he just on a short vacation?”

“No. After the funeral, he left immediately and never set foot here again… Hmm, it must have been about seven years.”

That was quite shocking.

The Catherine Elodie knew held deep affection for House Lysianthus—and this mansion in particular.

Yet, because of her, he’d abandoned this cherished home for a full seven years. She couldn’t help but feel a pang in her heart.

‘I’ll wait for you.’

Thus, Elodie deliberately stayed put. Instead, she sat comfortably in an armchair, sipping coffee and gazing out the window.

‘I hope Luke is doing well.’
