Miss Pendleton (Update to C.222 END) - Chapter 217
Chapter 70
In the front yard of the Whitefield estate, some twenty tents were set up.Each tent housed a buffet lined with various foods like barbecue, ox tongue, salads, seafood dishes, fruits, and puddings, with round tables arranged around them for guests to sit at.
An orchestra of eight musicians played Vivaldi’s Summer, while Laura and Ian, who had arrived earlier, expressed gratitude to each guest and guided them to their seats.
As the guests took their places, William and Olivia, holding the twins, went around the tables introducing the babies. The guests marveled, “Could there be babies this beautiful anywhere else?” and burst into delighted laughter.
William, of course, found his new nephews and nieces adorable, but his feelings paled in comparison to Olivia’s.Olivia was utterly smitten with the babies, who resembled the Dalton couple so closely, and she couldn’t get enough of them. She was immensely proud of herself for taking on the role of showing off the children in place of their busy uncle and aunt. She wanted to climb onto the buffet table and shout for all to hear, “I’m the godmother of these babies! That’s how much trust the Dalton couple has in me!”
Olivia channeled her overwhelming excitement in a more sensible way.To those praising the babies, she offered her most charming, rosy-cheeked smile and expressed her thanks. At such moments, people were captivated by Olivia’s beauty and recalled her standing behind Mrs. Dalton at the christening.
“Yes, that’s right. I’m the godmother of the children. And their aunt, too.”
Olivia smiled gracefully, tilting her head slightly to let the diamond earrings she had begged her mother for sparkle.
But Olivia’s proud godmother duties came to an end when Jane, who had been sleeping, opened her eyes. The moment Jane recognized the (still) unfamiliar woman holding her, she opened her cute lips, red like tulip buds, and began to cry.
Olivia’s flush faded in a panic.
Hearing the baby’s cries, Laura rushed over. She praised Olivia, saying, “Good job, Olivia,” then took the baby and left the tent.
Olivia followed her aunt with quick steps, her face looking as though she might burst into tears herself.
“Did I do something wrong, Aunt? Did I hurt Jane?”
“No, Olivia, you didn’t do anything wrong. Jane just cries easily.”
Laura stood under the shade of an apple tree not far from the tent. She soothed the wailing Jane and suggested to Olivia, “You must be hungry; go eat something, Olivia.”
