Miss Pendleton (Update to C.222 END) - Chapter 140
Laura Pendleton remembered how she had managed to return home on the first snowy day. The image of Mr. Dalton, whom she had met in front of the umbrella shop, stood vividly in her mind. She couldn’t recall the details of their conversation, but she remembered him pressing an umbrella into her hand. However, everything after collapsing into his arms was a dark blank.
The accounts of those around her filled in the rest. Mr. Dalton had wrapped her in his jacket and rushed her to a hotel room, they said. He stayed by her side until dawn, then left with only a mention of returning to Whitefield.
He had saved her. He had brought her, sick and vulnerable, safely back to her nest. Without him, she might have collapsed on the street, facing some terrible fate.
What if he, too, is suffering from a fever like I was…
Laura felt as if darkness was closing in before her eyes. She had been so gravely ill, she thought she might die. The idea that he might be enduring the same pain gripped her heart with guilt and worry, her hands trembling with anxiety.
Miss Hyde, returning with a glass of water, was startled by Laura’s pale complexion. She took the letter from Laura’s hand and made her lie back on the bed. Laura lay down, her heart heavy with unease.
Miss Hyde began reading the remaining letters aloud, but Laura heard none of it. Her mind was entirely consumed with worry for Mr. Dalton.
After finishing the last letter, Miss Hyde neatly arranged them and placed them in the letterbox at the bottom of the bedside table.
“They’re all good people,” she said. “Society is full of snobs, but Miss Pendleton, you’re surrounded by kind and loyal souls. That’s probably because you’re such a person yourself.”
Laura gave a shadowed smile.
“I’m not sure what kind of person I am, but it’s true that I’m surrounded by good people. One of them is you, Miss Hyde.”
Miss Hyde laughed lightly. She touched Laura’s forehead and tucked the blanket around her.
“Your complexion is getting worse somehow.”
“Maybe I got too excited about Christmas.”
“You’re like a child, Miss Pendleton.”

Male lead is a Divorced Husband
She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.
After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.
She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.
But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…
Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!
The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.
That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”
Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”
The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”
That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”
Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”
The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.
Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.
“She was originally a ‘she’!”
At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.
The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
