Miss Pendleton (Update to C.222 END) - Chapter 124
I met my first love at boarding school. She was two years my senior, with one year left before graduation. She graduated on schedule, and the following year, she married her fiancé. My heart felt like it was being torn apart. Compared to losing her, a crippled leg was no pain at all. My next love was someone I met in Africa. She was from America and had been divorced for about five years. We lived together for several years. If the law had allowed, I would have married her.
She tapped the floor with the tip of the cane she’d been holding throughout her story.
“That person ran into the flames to put out a fire at my coffee plantation and lost their life. It was a pain greater than bankruptcy, and I tried to end my life several times but failed each time. Eventually, I came to believe that continuing to live was what they would have wanted. So, I decided to make a living with the writing talent they always praised.”
“You’ve been through a lot of pain,” Laura said.
“I have no regrets. Meeting those two people made me happy. But, Miss Pendleton, my relationship with Jane is different.”
Miss Lottis stopped tapping the ground with her cane.
“The people I loved had been in such relationships multiple times before. They instinctively knew who I was and approached me with confidence. But I have no idea. I don’t know if Jane is like me.”
“You could just ask Miss Hyde directly,” Laura suggested.
“Jane probably doesn’t know either. It’s a matter of invisible emotions. Above all, Jane idolizes me. That’s the biggest problem. Idolatry and love are different. But Jane likes me so much that she might confuse the two. Or she might feel obligated to accept my feelings. That would be the worst—for her and for me.”
Miss Lottis shrugged.
“Now you understand why I can’t muster the courage.”
Laura gave a bittersweet smile.
“Yes. And why you’ve been giving me such earnest advice.”
Miss Lottis laughed and looked down at the streets of Bath again, hoping to catch sight of a lovely woman with an armful of books.
“If I could be certain that Jane feels the same way I do, like you and that man, I wouldn’t hesitate for a single second. Humans are born to love. That’s the most precious lesson the two people I loved taught me.”

Several months after transmigrating into a book, Yu Wu found herself facing the demon lord Li You, who could no longer conceal his dragon horns. With one hand on her aching waist and the other gripping a sharp sword, she stared at him.
The demon lord’s eyes were red with fury:
“This is all your doing! Today, I won’t rest until I kill you!”
Yu Wu rubbed her temples. Putting aside the taboo against bloodshed during pregnancy, wasn’t it this very man who willingly walked into her trap that day?!
