As the subordinate guard left laughing, Latil joined in the laughter and placed a wad of money in front of the guard.

The guard, with a ‘what is this?’ look on his face, was met with Latil’s cheerful proposition.

“Shall we make a bet? Whether I live in the imperial palace or not?”

Really, why would she… Seeing her confident demeanor, the guard flinched for the first time.

A noble? No, nobles don’t live in the imperial palace. A maid? But even maids wouldn’t express it as ‘living in the imperial palace’.

But his pride wouldn’t allow him to back down now, so the guard remained silent, wearing an angry expression.

How long did that last? The sound of chairs being pulled could be heard from outside. A murmuring noise. The sound of multiple people standing up at once.

Then, all the noise abruptly stopped, and with a puzzled expression, the guard stared at the closed door.

At that moment, the door flung open and Sonnaught entered.

Swiftly scanning the investigation room, Sonnaught’s eyes met Latil’s, and he scowled as if to say ‘this troublemaker’.

Even as Latil waved a small hand, his expression did not soften.

“What is it?”

The guard still didn’t understand what was happening.

“It’s Sir Sonnaught, commander of the Imperial Knights.”

As the captain of the guards who followed Sonnaught explained, the guard jumped up in surprise and saluted.

“Commander, it’s an honor.”

Ignoring the guard’s salute, Sonnaught walked straight over to Latil and asked worriedly.

“What on earth is going on, Your Majesty?”

At the word ‘Your Majesty’, the guard halted all his actions and turned only his eyes to look at Latil.

The captain of the guards apparently hadn’t known that Latil was the emperor either. He too froze in his tracks and stared at Latil in astonishment.

Everyone looked incredulous that the emperor was in a common police station.

That didn’t last long. Both the guard and the captain knelt almost simultaneously.

“We apologize, Your Majesty.”

“We failed to recognize you.”

Especially the guard who had ignored Latil’s words throughout, he looked as if he was doomed.

Latil waved a hand.

“Never mind that. Check among the drunks if anyone is hurt to the point of bleeding, or if there’s someone who used to carry green apples in a basket. Don’t mention that I am here.”

Green apples and a basket? The captain of the guard was puzzled, but right now he was just thankful the emperor was not angry.

Moreover, he couldn’t ask the emperor for an explanation right now, so he quickly took his subordinates outside.

After a while, the captain of the guards came back in and reported.

“There was someone who was bleeding.”

‘So I did smell blood.’

“There was also someone who said his parents used to have an orchard when he was young. But it was a very long time ago, and he thinks they didn’t have apple trees.”

“I see.”

Latil put on her cloak and hat that she had taken off.

‘So the feelings I saw were not from one of the drunks?’

But when she read other people’s feelings, it wasn’t like this, so why did these feelings feel so vivid, as if she had experienced them herself?

‘Do I have a new ability now?’

Although it wasn’t as surprising as when Carlein appeared in illusions, it was strange that I could smell blood better than others.

‘I shouldn’t just speak to Sonnaught. I am also strange.’

While preparing to leave the police station, Latil recalled the words her mother had told her about her brother. The words doubting that Latil was Lordra.

The assumption she had always denied was shaken for the first time. Latil bit her lips anxiously.

‘What on earth?’

[This is the time separator]

Throughout the walk at night, Sonnaught didn’t say a word. He just quietly followed from behind.

Usually, he would already be engaged in some pointless but pleasant chatter. But after a long period of silence, Sonnaught eventually opened his mouth first.

“Walking side by side with your majesty like this.”

“I am still angry. Let’s not recall the past.”

“……Your anger lasts long.”

“Not even a day has passed yet.”

“True, since your majesty was a child……”

“I said we aren’t recalling the past.”

“Even after growing old, will your majesty continue to hold grudges?”

“Oh, this person?”

As Latil glared at him, Sonnaught shrugged his shoulders.

“Since you said not to talk about the past.”

“Only talk about the present. Only the present!”

“Even after growing old, your majesty continues to hold grudges.”

“Sonnaught!”

Latil almost smiled without realizing it at Sonnaught, but she forcibly held back her smile. Now wasn’t the time to play around making jokes.

When Latil turned around and started walking again, Sonnaught quickly caught up, muttering.

“I will cover up your majesty’s incident of being caught at the police station.”

“It sounds like a threat that if I don’t cool down, you will spread the word.”

“You read my intentions well.”

At the mention of intentions, Latil flinched.

“I do read quite well.”

Sonnaught’s vaguely laughing voice was heard. Just with that sound, Latil felt her anger beginning to subside, which made her even more upset.

Even though she trusted him as much as a magnet, it seemed like it would be hard to bear if he betrayed her.

“Sonnaught, you should not betray me.”

“I won’t.”

“I am suspicious.”

“It’s okay. You can keep suspecting.”

“!”

“You will focus on me for a while.”

“What do you mean?”

“It means I like getting your attention.”

As Latil stared in surprise, Sonnaught took out a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her.

“You have grease on your mouth. What did you eat so deliciously?”

Sausage! Having oil smeared on my lips even at this moment! Latil took the handkerchief as if snatching it and scrubbed her lips hard.

Sonnaught was about to laugh, but when he saw Latil’s wideeyed stare, he coughed awkwardly and changed the subject.

“But where are you going now?”

“To my brother. To grab him by the collar.”

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
