“What is this situation?” Latil’s eyes widened as she stared at Aini. However, Aini did not even look at Latil. She only fixed her gaze on Carlein.
The pretty meloncolored eyes she had admired when she first saw him were firmly nailed to one person, not moving at all.
This wasn’t the attitude of someone dealing with a stranger, was it? Moreover, it seemed unlikely that she had merely seen him in passing, as she could mention Carlein’s name just by hearing his voice.
“Do you know each other?”
However, when Latil asked, Carlein answered immediately.
“I don’t know her.”
In contrast to Aini, Carlein’s voice fell like droplets, solid and unwavering.
Rather than being angry at Aini, it was just Carlein’s average attitude towards the majority of people he wasn’t close to. As he said, he seemed to have no idea who Aini was.
But did his attitude hurt Aini?
“You don’t know me?”
Aini’s voice was weak, like a halfbroken thread. Her eyes grew larger at Carlein’s words, and her eyelashes trembled.
Carlein responded with a ‘yes’ and did not say another word, turning his head back towards Latil.
‘What’s going on between them, exactly?’
Latil scratched her cheek unnecessarily, alternately looking at Carlein and Aini.
One was behaving as though they had met a very important and precious person. The other was dealing with that person as though asking ‘why are you acting like that?’ It was unclear what she should do in between them.
“Let’s go in first.”
Latil pointed over her shoulder and took three steps back. Carlein was about to follow her, but he hesitated, his clothing being grabbed by someone.
Aini. She reached out and pulled at the hem of Carlein’s cloak near his waist. When the hat part of the cloak he had been wearing flipped back, the moonlit, cold beauty that had been hidden under the black cloak was revealed.
Seeing that, Aini’s pupils dilated even more. As if to say, ‘I knew it was you.’
On the other hand, Carlein looked at Latil as if asking ‘Why is she like this?’ He strained his eyes and tightly closed his lips.
Latil shrugged her shoulders, making a ‘I’m at a loss too’ expression. Aini was the empress of this country. She was currently in a situation where her identity was concealed, so it was difficult to flatly tell her not to do something.
Finally, Carlein openly looked at Aini and said.
“I don’t know who you are, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t pull on my clothes.”
With a blunt statement, Carlein took a step forward. As he naturally pulled his clothing from Aini’s hand, her previously blank face was instantly stained, as if doused with coffee.
After that, she seemed to want to say something, her lips parting slightly. But before she could finish, she fell forward like a puppet with its strings cut.
“Uh.”
Latil instinctively ran forward to catch Aini.
“Carlein. This woman is the empress of this country.”
As she gently laid Aini on what appeared to be a soft patch of grass, Latil informed Carlein in a low voice.
“Is that so.”
However, Carlein’s attitude was still indifferent.
“Do you really not know her?”
Upon seeing this, a confused Latil asked, and Carlein immediately replied without hesitation.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure it’s not that you’ve met her but don’t remember?”
“One could know me without me knowing them. I do not know her.”
Looking down at the pale Aini whose face had drained of all color, Latil let out a sigh, removed her hand from under Aini’s neck, and stood up.
“I need to let people know that the empress has fainted, first.”
Just as she was about to ask Carlein ‘how should we inform them?’, the sound of fast approaching footsteps could be heard. The sound of someone forcefully stepping on stones, full of anger.
Latil halted her words and looked up. In the distance, a group of women was running towards them, stamping heavily on the purple stone road.
Given their expensive looking outfits and meticulously groomed hair, it was clear that they were Aini’s maids.
As Latil was about to speak to them, the maids, now close, rushed towards Aini who lay on the ground. They screamed as if they had found a deer hit by a carriage.
“Oh my, Empress!”
“What’s happened!”
“Your Majesty, are you alright?”
The unconscious Aini couldn’t respond. Seeing Aini just lying down even when called, they stopped calling out to her. They straightened their bent backs and started blaming Latil.
“How dare you disrespect the Empress, are you sane?”
“We saw everything on the way here.”
“We saw you bring down the Empress!”
Latil opened her mouth in disbelief.
‘What have I done?’
If they hadn’t seen and said that, she would be simply exasperated, but it was utterly ridiculous to say that after seeing everything. Was she supposed to have used some psychic power visible only to them to bring Aini down?
“What is your name and status? Who are you to dare sit in the Empress’s house and attack the Empress?”
But before Latil could answer,
“This is my house, and Sadi is my friend.”
Another footstep and a low voice could be heard.
“On what authority are you bothering my friend?”

The young master had slightly reddened eyes, and his every move exuded charm.
The sight made Li Ruantang’s eyes hot and her heart flutter. After all, she had made a bet with the young master Meng from the neighboring family. If she couldn’t marry a husband before the end of the year, she would have to admit defeat and give up the jade she had worked so hard to obtain.
Outside the window, the flowers were in full bloom.
Rather than losing the bet, the jade, and her face, Li Ruantang calculated that it would be better to seek marriage with the young master in front of her, killing three birds with one stone.
…
Meng Jun never thought that an accident during a spring outing would lead to them rolling down a cliff and into a river, yet still survive.
Now they were trapped in an unknown village, and Meng Jun had overheard that the family who had rescued them had their own intentions.
After all, it was Li Ruantang who had lost her mind and sought marriage first. He was only trying to protect himself!
Glancing at Li Ruantang, who was listing her own merits, the young husband’s voice softened, and he blushed as he lied, “W-wife-master, Wife-master, don’t you remember me?”
The young husband’s voice was clear and handsome, coaxing Li Ruantang’s heart to be soft and sweet, and she spared no effort to protect him.
It wasn’t until they returned to the capital that Li Ruantang suddenly remembered.
When they had fallen off the cliff, in order not to implicate Wei Yunruo, whom he secretly admired, the young husband had instead pulled her, who was slightly farther away, down the cliff with him…
