Seeing this, Latil, shocked, looked at him, and the stranger turned his head towards Latil, awkwardly laughed ‘haha’, and brought his hand to his face.
Then he made a motion as if removing something from his face, and amazingly, as he did so, the white mask from earlier appeared from his previously empty hand.
“I apologize, Your Highness. As it seemed like just a mask no matter how I looked at it, I tried it on.”
The knight, thinking that Latil was scolding him for casually wearing the mask, apologized awkwardly.
“But even when I wear the mask, nothing much seems to change. And there’s nothing special on the inside of the mask.”
Latil quickly noticed. That knight, he didn’t realize that his face had changed when he wore the mask!
So, does that mean the ability of this mask is to change people’s faces? Is it one of the magical artifacts left from the ancient times?
Latil swallowed. A mask that changes faces. Then it was indeed valuable enough to be hidden and marked on a map.
This thing… depending on how it’s used, it could be very dangerous or very useful.
‘If this had fallen into the enemies’ hands, it would have been disastrous. Even if I remember their faces, I wouldn’t know who the enemy is.’
“Your Highness?”
As Latil just stood still, the knight called her cautiously.
“Why are you doing this?”
Latil quickly smiled as if nothing was wrong and shook her head.
“No, it’s just that the harvest is not very substantial for all the effort we put in.”
“That’s true……”
Latil strode over to the knight, took back the mask, and deliberately put it back in the box.
“But still, just in case, when we get back to the palace, I’ll have to have the scholars take a look at it.”
“Yes. That would be better.”
[This is the time separator]As soon as dawn arrived and the surroundings were bright enough to distinguish, Latil and the knight descended the mountain, chewing on dried meat.
As they had sneakily slipped out under the pretext of being sick, they had to hurry back to the palace.
She thought that her brother would wisely block the people, but if the emperor did not show her face for too long, everyone would find it strange.
“I’ll go get a carriage.”
After descending from the mountain, while Latil grabbed an inn and washed up, the knight was constantly walking around outside to secure a carriage.
Latil quickly washed herself, washed her hair, and hid the mask from the box inside her clothes.
She had told the knight, ‘I should have this studied by scholars’, but she had no intention of doing so right away. Why should she, when she had such an interesting object?
Latil wanted to use it usefully, not to study it. Especially since they didn’t know what kind of enemy was inside.
‘Maybe I can sort out the enemies with this.’
A little while later, the knight returned with a purchased carriage and horse, and Latil told him to wash up, then bought some food, got in the carriage first, and waited for the knight to return.
“We will depart now, Your Highness.”
On the way back from Karisen to Tarium, Latil fiddled with the mask and tested how the mask activated its effects.
Looking through the small hand mirror confirmed it. Once the mask was worn, it did indeed change one’s face.
And while this wasn’t precise, the face that the mask created astonishingly lacked any distinct features. It was so nondescript that if one briefly glanced at it, they would not remember it at all.
It wasn’t simply a matter of facial features, the aura was just so.
‘Is this also an effect of the mask?’
[This is the time separator]Thanks to their relentless travel, Latil and the knight arrived back in the capital in no time.
“I’ll sell the horse and carriage again, Your Majesty.”
“Do so.”
Latil checked into a nearby inn and listened for any rumors about ‘the Emperor’s disappearance,’ but fortunately, there were none.
Latil bathed thoroughly, changed her clothes, and entered the palace through the main gate with the knight.
“You’ve worked hard. Well done.”
“Not at all. It was an honor to accompany you, Your Majesty.”
“Take a rest today. You must have been tired these past few days.”
“Yes. Please rest well, Your Majesty.”
Latil patted the shoulder of the knight who had hardly slept for several days and walked towards the palace corridor where her bedroom was.
On her way to the bedroom, she thought of Sonnaught first.
‘What would Sonnaught say?’
She had left without saying anything, but she couldn’t avoid speaking upon her return.
If Sonnaught found out that Latil had secretly visited Karisen with Leean, he would probably stand agape, completely taken aback. He might even get angry.
‘Come to think of it, I’ve never seen Sir Sonnaught angry. He’s always so diplomatic.’
Laughing quietly to herself, Latil pushed back the cloak that covered her face.
After climbing a few steps, she finally saw the bedroom door at the end of the corridor. However, as she walked along the corridor, she felt a scorching gaze on her face.
‘What?’
Was it because the ailing Emperor was walking around the corridor instead of being in the bedroom? The palace staff all bowed in greeting, but their faces were shocked.
As Latil turned her head and glanced back, they hurriedly bowed their heads and retreated as if fleeing.
‘Why are they behaving like this?’
Latil felt uneasy because it was not the way to treat the Emperor.
‘What happened? Did something happen and the news didn’t leak out of the palace?’
Her heart itched with anxiety and her stomach hurt for no reason. Latil hastened her steps to her bedroom.
However, the moment she reached the bedroom door, a maid came out, saw Latil, dropped the teacup she was holding, covered her ears with both hands, and screamed.
“Ah! She’s here! She’s here!”
Latil was baffled. What was here? What had appeared?
“What are you talking about?”
As Latil asked and advanced, the maid screamed ‘Ah! Ah! Ah!’ even louder and ran back into the room, as if running away.
As the door closed with a bang, Latil was taken aback.
‘What’s with her?’
However, before she could wonder, the royal guards standing on either side of the door drew their swords and began to watch Latil warily.
“What the hell are you doing?”
When Latil, annoyed and angry, asked, the knights exchanged glances, taken aback.
Bewildered, Latil banged on the wall with her hand.
“What the hell are you doing? Did your eyes rot in just a few days? How dare you point a sword at me?”
As she spoke, her voice unconsciously turned low and cold. At first, she was just confused, but thinking about it made her angry.
Upon seeing this, the knights continued to exchange confused glances.
“Don’t be fooled.”
Then, from inside the room, a voice, familiar yet strange, sternly issued a command.
It was a very peculiar voice. Not so much the voice itself, but rather the feeling it gave Latil when she heard it.
And she had no choice but to feel that way. She could tell why when she saw the person who spoke.
“!”
The face of the person who came out of the door. The face of the one who ordered the knights, ‘Don’t be fooled,’ as he came out.
She straightened her back and tied her hair up high. That face was indeed Latil’s own. Even the voice was the same as Latil’s.
‘What is this…?’
