“What is it? I will assist in any way possible.”
“Well… can you check on… Ranamun’s… precious… you know?”
However, the prime minister who had promised to assist with anything, instantly leaned away upon hearing her request.
“Why should I check there?!”
“I want to find out something.”
“I don’t want to find out anything!”
“No, it’s not what you think. There seems to be a problem with its… function.”
The prime minister shivered as Latil hastily waved her hands to explain. But the prime minister’s panic only escalated.
“You must be joking!”
“!”
“What do you want me to do?”
“No, Ranamun isn’t impotent. He’s not impotent, I tell you.”
“It’s normal to deny it at first.”
“He’s really not. Anyway, can you at least check it out?”
But no matter how kindly Latil asked, the prime minister just turned pale.
“I don’t want to! I don’t want to see it!”
“Fine. Then don’t look. You can check with your eyes closed, can’t you?”
“That’s even worse!”
“Then keep your eyes open!”
“That’s not the problem!”
Seeing the usually kind prime minister unusually flustered, Latil finally furrowed her brow and asked,
“What’s the problem? Aren’t you a prime minister? Is it so repulsive to look after a patient? Ranamun… he’s like a withered bean sprout now!”
“……”
“Ah, just to be clear. I was just using that as a metaphor for the overall situation. Not… there. Yes, that area is in a poor state, but it’s an illness, right?”
When Latil made it clear that she was disappointed, the prime minister, feeling wronged, finally shouted in protest.
“In order to treat, I have to touch the wound!”
“Oh.”
That’s right? Latil covered her mouth with one hand and widened her eyes, making the prime minister droop his shoulders in a gloomy way.
[This is the time separator]Despite his great reluctance, the prime minister ended up accompanying Latil to see Ranamun.
Ranamun, seeing Latil return, quickly opened the door. However, upon seeing the prime minister whom Latil dragged along, his knees buckled and he nearly collapsed.
Seeing Ranamun glaring at her like she was a traitor, Latil felt wronged.
No, I went through all this trouble convincing the prime minister to come and help cure your illness, why are you looking at me like that? Did I give you the illness? I’m just trying to get your illness diagnosed so we can find a cure.
In the end, Latil deliberately turned cold and pointed to the bed.
“Go there. Both of you.”
As Ranamun and the prime minister trudged over like they were glued to the floor, Latil had them sit side by side before issuing another order.
“Fix it.”
As soon as the command dropped, the faces of Ranamun and the prime minister turned as pale as if they hadn’t slept in two weeks.
“……”
“……”
Seeing both Ranamun and the prime minister frozen, Latil sighed and tried to convince them again.
“Ranamun, you’re ill and trying to get better. Prime minister, you’re just doing your duty in treating a patient. Right now, both of you aren’t my consorts, just think of yourselves as a patient and a doctor.”
Finally, after Latil spoke so much, the prime minister reluctantly rolled up his sleeve and muttered.
“As Your Majesty has said, Ranamun is a patient. Even if it’s awkward, I’ll provide the treatment.”
When Ranamun implored in a groveling voice, “I am counting on you.”, Latil almost broke into a smile unwittingly.
However, if she laughed here, they both would have obviously run away. Hence, biting her tongue, Latil was able to suppress her laughter and wore a more intimidating face than usual.
“But Your Majesty, Ranamun. If these symptoms are not due to a deliberate attack, but a natural change in the body, I wouldn’t be able to do anything.”
“A natural change in the body?”
“For instance, if someone was weakened by poison, I could treat it. But, if there is nothing like that and one’s body is inherently weak, I wouldn’t be able to treat it.”
“If it’s like that, there’s nothing we can do.”
As Latil nodded, the Minister took a deep breath and slowly lowered his hand.
[This is the time separator]Some time later, Latil learned that the changes in Ranamun were not natural. His symptoms improved as soon as the Minister began the treatment.
“So, this means it’s that. Someone attacked Ranamun and caused this. Did they feed him poison or something?”
As Latil mumbled coldly, Ranamun also spoke with a more icy demeanor than usual.
“We must catch the culprit.”
The Minister also agreed, his usual affable demeanor nowhere to be seen.
“We have to catch them and give them the same punishment. Of course, we won’t provide the culprit any treatment.”
Although he had performed the treatment, it seemed he still felt somewhat wronged. Latil nodded and asked Ranamun,
“Right, Ranamun. When exactly did the symptoms start?”
“Two days ago.”
“Were there any suspicious or strange occurrences before that?”
“Nothing particularly suspicious…”
As he was about to say there was nothing, Ranamun remembered the mushroom soup served twice in a row and let out a sigh, “Ah.”
“Why? Do you remember something?”
“Yes. Mushroom soup was served twice in a row for breakfast.”
The Minister had an expression that said ‘What’s the big deal?’ but Latil was taken aback by Ranamun’s words.
“The same menu was served twice in a row?”
“Yes.”
“That’s surprising? It’s suspicious.”
The Minister continued to look between Latil and Ranamun, still wearing the ‘Why is that a big deal?’ expression.
He didn’t understand why they were making such a fuss, as there were times at the temple when he ate the same menu for an entire week. Anyway, the two seemed to understand each other, so he remained silent.
“Should we gather the palace servants and ask them who served you the drugged soup, Ranamun?”
However, when Latil suggested an approach that disregarded Ranamun’s dignity, the Minister hastily interjected to veto it, saying it was inappropriate.
“Even considering Ranamun’s dignity, how could you do that, Your Majesty.”
“Dignity will be hurt by the one who mixed the drug. Why Ranamun?”
“What are you going to say to the palace servants?”
“Who is it! Who dared to feed Ranamun a sterilizing drug!”
Upon hearing the hypothetical scenario that Latil suggested, Ranamun’s face paled and he quickly took the Minister’s side.
“I agree with the Minister’s opinion. I want the culprit to be caught quietly.”
Latil knew that if she scolded the people collectively, someone might spill their inner thoughts, so she wanted to publicly find the culprit who fed Ranamun the sterilizing drug.
However, when the party in question, Ranamun, turned pale and rejected the idea, she had no choice but to nod.
“Alright. Let’s investigate quietly then. For now… right. We need to go see the head cook.”
[This is the time separator]When Latil met the head cook in the kitchen, she heard an astonishing story.
“You prepared pea soup?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
The head cook claimed that he had never prepared mushroom soup for Ranamun.
‘So, what’s this? Did the culprit switch the soup in the middle? And add the drug then?’
Latil laughed brightly. This would make the case easier.
“We need to interrogate those who transported the soup.”
After that, things unfolded smoothly, and Latil found out that the original pea soup was supposed to go to Ranamun’s room, and the mushroom soup to Klein’s room.
They said they had changed the soup because Ranamun disliked peas. It was possible for the servants to change the soup at their discretion to accommodate the picky eater.
“Then was the actual target Prince Klein?”
The servant who had requested the soup change was Ranamun’s, and if the soup hadn’t been changed, Prince Klein would have been the one to eat it.
As Prince Klein couldn’t have known beforehand whether Ranamun’s servant would ask for the soup to be changed or not, this could not have been a plot of Prince Klein’s own making.
“Then someone targeted Klein and drugged him. Who could have done that? If it were someone who had the most quarrels with Klein… it could have been Guesta.”
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
