“First child, sit right there. Second child, sit beside him. Don’t wander around recklessly. No—don’t sit there! Damn it. Why do you insist on sitting exactly where I told you not to, only to topple over?”

“Your Highnesses, once you’re full, stop playing and put your bowls down. Hey, first child—don’t spill your food on the floor. Second child—don’t copy him.”

“First child, don’t lie down on the floor. Second—what on earth are you picking up to eat?”

As Calain darted between the three children, barking orders as if commanding mercenaries, the maids tittered and giggled, watching the scene with amusement.

When the nursemaids returned after finishing their meals and saw Calain completely worn out, they doubled over laughing.

This went on for several hours.

Calain sat on the sofa, pressing his fingers to his forehead. The constant wailing and shrieking of the three children, taking turns crying, had nearly shattered his mind.

When it had been just the prince alone, it was somewhat manageable—he’d sleep a bit, wake up to cry, then sleep again.

But now, with the two other children playing nearby and shrieking like banshees, the prince kept waking up just as he was drifting off, crying anew each time.

“Lord Calain, this won’t do. His Highness isn’t getting any sleep at all!”
