Ranamun looked into the soft basket at the colorfully swaddled sleeping baby. The infant was incredibly tiny.

Seeing the baby, Ranamun unconsciously grasped the tiny hand. He furrowed his brow.

A chill crept into a corner of his heart. Though he’d assured the Emperor everything would work out, in truth, he felt confident about nothing at all.

“Keep watching over the child.”

After instructing the royal physician’s assistant who had come along, Ranamun placed a hand on his scabbard and stepped outside the carriage.

The mountain path was dark, and the moonlight wasn’t bright enough. The usual noisy cicadas had fallen silent. Only the baby inside the carriage was crying.

“You can go back inside if you’d like.”

The vampire mercenaries who had been tailing them quietly approached and spoke. They surrounded the carriage as if providing an escort.

Ranamun knew these guards could turn against him at any moment. Instead of retreating inside, he drew his sword.
