“Judging by the handwriting, it looks like something a doctor wrote.”

Having worked at the clinic herself, Edith was used to scribbling notes just like this, so it wasn’t hard to guess that a physician had drafted this document.

After all, remarks about brain damage due to side effects or potential memory loss were precisely the kind of things only a doctor would say.

Edith quickly averted her eyes. Reading documents left on someone else’s desk was clearly not something to be proud of.

But the contents she’d already absorbed couldn’t be easily erased from her mind. She began pondering deeply about what sort of research Theos was conducting.

“Could he be studying Walter’s past magical surge?”

Bain had praised Theos, saying that although his magical power itself was mediocre, his understanding of magic and skill with magical formulas surpassed even mages who’d worked at Lexion for years.

So it made some sense—if Walter had tasked him with researching that past magical surge in hopes of recovering Isaac-era memories.

“But if that’s not it…”

Just as Edith was weighing another possibility, Theos suddenly burst toward the desk, halfway through buttoning his coat, knocking things over with a clatter.

“I—I’m so sorry! The desk is dreadfully messy, isn’t it? I’ve shown you an unbecoming sight, Madam.”

Theos stuffed the papers into a drawer at lightning speed. Though his words suggested he was tidying up for Edith’s sake, his thoughts were far more complicated.

He found it difficult to conceal both these documents and the subject of his research from the Madam who treated him with such kindness.

“Why must Viscount give me such a trial?”

Of course, Theos knew that despite his brusque manner of speech, the Viscount was surprisingly thoughtful—occasionally dropping by with a warm meat pie to ask about his research progress.
