“Walter was definitely there when the volunteer militia led the villagers to surround the Portrion mansion.”

Though Isabel held not a shred of personal bias toward Walter, she remembered him clearly because his face had stood out so distinctly amid the crowd.

Anyone belonging to the volunteer militia shouldn’t have liked anyone connected to Nicholas—and thus the viscountess—but Walter had been diligently guarding Edith.

Moreover, the way Walter looked at Edith seemed a bit… too much for just a bodyguard.

“!”

Only then did Isabel think she understood who had helped Edith, supposedly bound by a restraint spell, escape from the mansion.

Edith couldn’t figure out why Isabel was smiling like a cat that had just spotted an amusing spectacle.

“Edith, now that we’ve met, I should probably talk to you about that request you made last time.”

‘Ah, it must be about the high-ranking mage I asked you to summon.’

Edith asked Walter to step aside briefly, then moved close to the wall and questioned Isabel.

“Did the mage go to Portrion territory?”

“No, I received a letter recently. He said his schedule had opened up a bit earlier and asked if he should come to the territory. But by then, you’d already left for the capital.”

“Oh…”

Just as Edith was thinking how wasteful it was—after all, Karckus Guild Master had spent quite a bit of money on this—Isabel continued matter-of-factly.

“I’ve already moved the meeting place to the capital for now. Since you helped me out, it only makes sense to let you use the mage once, right?”
