Having received explicit orders from Helen to ensure, by any means necessary, that Edith accompany her, Max’s tone carried an unusual urgency.

Hearing Max’s words, Edith turned to Walter and asked,

“Walter, didn’t you say you’d already arranged a carriage and lodging?”

Her intention was to avoid double expenses—if possible, cancel the prior arrangements and save money where she could.

However, Max, who had witnessed over the past few months how Walter spared no material or emotional resource for Edith’s sake, misunderstood her meaning.

‘Walter, our contracted carriage and lodging seem better—must we really accept Helen’s offer?’

If Walter simply agreed and Edith decided against joining the trip, it would be a disaster.

Thus, Max quickly interjected before Walter could reply.

“Just so you know, the Portrions own a townhouse in the capital. I believe it was acquired at great expense by previous viscounts… but there are still several staff residing there, so its condition should be acceptable.”

“Hmm.”

“I—I also plan to offer you the mistress’s chamber, which boasts a magnificent view of the capital’s night scenery.”

“I doubt I’ll care what’s outside the window. Security and safety come before aesthetics.”

Though Edith genuinely meant she didn’t care about the view at all, Max interpreted it as her saying she’d forgo the view entirely if granted top-tier protection.

“Of course. Safety is paramount—I wholeheartedly agree. Nearly all the escorts accompanying you will be trustworthy individuals, former members of the volunteer corps who’ve recently received knighthood.”
