The climate the next day was so mild it made the first snowfall of the previous night seem insignificant.

Thanks to Walter gathering and drying twigs to build a generous fire, Edith was able to sleep in warmly and leisurely for once.

As he gazed at her sleeping face, Walter recalled the expression she had worn the night before.

“Walter, the child—.”

At that moment, Edith had clearly been hesitating about something. Her expression had resembled that of someone torn between telling a lie or not.

‘Is she reluctant to say who the father of the child is?’

His brow furrowed as he remembered Merlin’s claim that Edith was carrying another man’s child. To clear his thoughts, Walter slowly scanned her small dwelling.

There were few decorative trinkets—she apparently didn’t collect such things—and books were by far the most common item in the modest house. Confirming that she was deeply asleep, Walter quietly took one of the books she’d been reading.

Though the title sounded intriguing, its contents consisted mostly of academic explanations of the roles and functions of various body parts, making it far from stimulating.

‘How can anyone get excited reading this?’

No matter how he thought about it, Edith hardly seemed like someone who would entertain men behind his back while secretly reading such dull material.

When Sophia had offered her a large sum of money to bear Hans’s child, Edith had adamantly refused, using every possible means as if determined to prevent that very thing.

He had witnessed many times that Edith’s nature was to use her wits to deceive or escape tricky situations.

Would a woman like that really resign herself to total dependence on another man, spend a desperate night with him, and end up pregnant?

Merlin, who barely knew her, might have been deceived—but to Walter, who had closely observed Edith, it seemed a hasty lie.
