When Merlin heard her say she would leave, he looked as if Walter had become his forever.

“You’ve made the right choice, Miss Edith.”

If he was going to say it was the right decision, he might as well have given her even a single outer garment—but Merlin merely gestured with his eyes as if urging her to leave immediately.

‘What a heartless, cold-blooded wretch.’

Even knowing Walter had deceived her, to cast out a pregnant woman into this cold without so much as a coat!

Edith stepped out onto the frozen ground wearing only indoor slippers. Though the snow hadn’t even begun to pile up yet, her body’s warmth vanished in an instant.

“Please keep this a secret from Walter. I’m asking you once again.”

After deceiving Merlin once more with a desperate plea, Edith walked away through the falling snow, leaving the volunteer corps building behind.

Normally, guards would have been stationed everywhere, but today—after the recent armed conflict and right after completing the crucial task regarding Helen’s succession—security at the side gate was lax.

‘Merlin must have known about this situation and summoned me here precisely today.’

She gritted her chattering teeth and walked out.

Merlin stood by the doorway for a long while, watching to see if Edith might turn back.

Yet she seemed truly determined to leave, disappearing quickly beyond the horizon.
