“What do you mean? Walter has disappeared?”

In the dead of night, Elizabeth snapped at Eisen with a voice laced with equal parts shock and anger.

Eisen, who had come to report only after verifying Walter’s disappearance several times, was just as frustrated.

“It’s exactly as I said. It seems Walter has vanished.”

“You’ve thoroughly searched the entire mansion, right? He might have sensed we’re looking for him and hidden himself in some secluded spot—like a storage room.”

“We checked the storage rooms, the overgrown bushes and pits in the abandoned garden, even the hollows in the old trees—everything meticulously.”

“But still…”

Elizabeth thought Eisen and Gerturk’s private soldiers must have overlooked something.

After all, Walter had been trapped in the mansion for seven long years without a successful escape. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t tried to flee during that time.

“The maids said that on the day Nicholas irritated him, he ran toward the estate’s boundary only to be thrown back by an invisible barrier. Did you inspect the area near the barrier too?”

“Of course.”

It simply didn’t make sense that such a man would slip out of the mansion the moment assassins showed up.

Elizabeth tapped her fingers on the table, then reached a decision.

“Then discreetly investigate the servants who might know about his whereabouts. Approach them as if you’re just trying to build rapport—make it seem as natural as possible so neither Isabel nor Edith grows suspicious.”

“Understood.”
