Portrion was a territory with reasonably decent agricultural yields.

Though its climate wasn’t suitable for experimenting with diverse crops, it had a massive river running through the domain all the way to the sea.

The river was mostly peaceful, but according to rumors, it had caused trouble several times in the past.

Edith, sifting through her memories, explained this to Walter.

“In the Portrion domain, heavy rains fall every fifteen years during summer. Since it’s not just a day or two of rain, infrastructure for flood preparation is well-established—but I heard there was an issue about thirty years ago.”

“An issue?”

“Yeah. There’s a levee downstream, and because it wasn’t properly maintained in time, it apparently caused major damage.”

Though Edith hadn’t even been born yet during that time, she knew about it because Director Homann would reminisce about those days whenever it rained.

He’d said it was utter chaos, with injured flood victims flooding into the clinic.

“I heard the seawater even flowed backward, ruining not just that year’s harvest but several years’ worth of crops afterward.”

Walter already knew many people in Portrion relied on farming for their livelihood.

“If the damage was that severe, whoever was responsible for maintaining the levee probably wanted to flee overnight.”

“That’s exactly why they were criticized even more. The duty of maintaining the domain’s levee falls to Viscount Portrion.”

“So the Portrions have always been busy with all sorts of things.”

“At that time, it was said that someone in charge at the viscount’s estate omitted a step in the procedure, causing rushed and inadequate repairs.”
