Walter sighed heavily, his breath ragged, as he scanned the room. The only sound in the silent space was his own breathing. It was his and Edith’s marital bedroom.

Only the cool moonlight illuminated the room, and the sole source of warmth was Edith, collapsed facedown on the bed, sleeping as if unconscious.

“…Edith.”

His voice came out hoarse and weak—he couldn’t tell how long it had been since he’d passed out.

Walter gently stroked her tousled golden hair, his heart growing heavy at the clear signs of exhaustion on her face.

He didn’t need to ask to know she hadn’t rested properly, worrying over him.

Yet, despite her concerns, the wound inflicted by Patricia’s dagger had healed cleanly, and his body felt as light as if he’d just awakened from deep sleep.

Most importantly, though he didn’t understand how, his memories of the past had returned with perfect clarity.

‘If I recall correctly, the physicians said I’d have to choose between my life or my memories.’

Amidst his fading consciousness, the fragmented conversations of his physicians had been filled only with despair. Some had firmly believed he’d lose his memories forever—an unfortunate but inevitable outcome.

And yet, somehow…

Just as Walter was pondering this mystery and slowly steadying his breath, the clouds obscuring the moonlight parted, brightening the room further.

Only then did he notice that the nightstand—usually adorned with nothing but a single vase—was now crowded with various objects.

Ornaments, not the finest quality but clearly well cared for; countless letters Edith had sent to Isaac and had been returned; and a small wooden jewelry box she’d secretly hidden away during their several moves, never once showing him its contents.

Thinking it might be a Lowell family heirloom, Walter opened the lid—and instantly recognized what lay inside, though its original form had long since vanished.
