A few days later, a secret conversation was taking place deep within the massive mountain range at the edge of Humphrey’s territory.

“Stay alert—they’ll be passing by soon.”

At the order from Gilbert, his subordinate spoke, and the mage accompanying them quietly concentrated his magic.

Gilbert had arrived at the barony a few days prior and, during dinner with Baron Humphrey, hastily summoned his subordinate and handed him a small note.

“On this day, at this hour, Viscount Lexion will return to the capital via the route marked on the map—make it look like an accident, just as we did before.”

“Understood, Lord Gilbert.”

“Roll their carriage down the mountain path so they die instantly. If there’s a newborn, bring it to me first—we must study the structure of the magic flowing in their blood if we’re to bring down House Lexion.”

All those hiding among the mountains, having followed Gilbert out of sheer loyalty to Humphrey’s lands, knew full well what was at stake.

If this plot failed, their master—who was already considered incompetent by Empress Patricia—would surely lose all standing.

“There’s the carriage.”

One of Gilbert’s men, who had been watching only the entrance of the narrow pass between the cliffs, spoke, and the group swiftly scattered in unison.

‘My lord must finally show some results this time…’

But as the carriage drew closer, the group relaxed and smirked faintly.

“Judging by the crest and its size, it’s unmistakably Lexion’s carriage.”

“The trailing cargo carts confirm it’s a procession heading to the capital.”
