“What are you talking about? My daughter being sold off?”

Elizabeth reflexively asked back. More shocking than the fact that Edith knew about her daughter was what came next.

Though Edith had offered no proof, Elizabeth’s face—and even her blood—had already turned cold.

Elizabeth, who enjoyed collecting the gossip of high society, had once heard rumors that Count Humphrey was a dog-like wretch who got excited over young children.

And for some reason, she also knew that Gerturk maintained a close relationship with that despicable man who deserved to be castrated.

But Edith’s claim that her own daughter was somehow involved with them was utterly devastating.

Even though she told herself inwardly not to be swayed by baseless words, it was no use. Memories of how the count and countess, along with Gilbert, had subtly tried to separate Elise from her kept flashing before her eyes like scenes from a galloping horse lantern.

Yet now, hearing Edith’s words—spoken as if giving her time to reconsider—her once-solid faith crumbled entirely.

Just moments ago, she’d clearly held the upper hand. She’d planned to ask the Empress and her close aides what they’d give her if she didn’t reveal the pregnancy news, especially since the Empress trusted her enough to offer her a personal maid position.
