The atmosphere was so serene one could reasonably anticipate an even more splendid vista once winter blanketed the land in snow.

Uncharacteristically, my son—accompanied by his fiancée, whose beauty was almost infuriating—appeared before me and presented a white envelope.

The Duchess, who had been savoring the floral tea, narrowed her eyes as if trying to peer through the translucent envelope and asked,

“What is this, Grand Duke?”

“Open it and see.”

“Are you giving me a surprise gift?”

The Duchess smiled, glancing toward Scathach seated beside her son sharing tea, seeking her agreement.

Scathach, however, turned her gaze toward the rows of low shrubs planted throughout the garden instead of meeting the Duchess’s eyes. She knew precisely what the Duchess intended, yet lacked the innocence to respond with a naive smile.

It remained unclear what decision Casar had reached, having given no definite answer the previous night.

Thus, Scathach herself had no idea what lay inside that white envelope.

The Duchess instructed a servant to bring a paper knife to slit the envelope open.
