Having finished even a light chat about the assembly—whose turn had already come around again—set to open tomorrow, as the guests began mingling in small groups, Ophelia called Hazelle, who had been standing guard behind her, aside and asked,

“…Hasn’t my husband seemed a bit different from usual today?”

The ever-cheerful red-haired knight widened her eyes in surprise and answered,

“Your Highness appears as sensitive as ever.”

Then, Hazelle added needlessly,

“Since you sensed something, you truly are different as a married couple!”

When the knight—who clearly believed them to be perfectly harmonious—winked, Ophelia realized she had asked a foolish question. She shouldn’t have asked Hazelle.

Turning her gaze away from the knight, Ophelia spotted Idren sitting alone near the fireplace. He was seated in one of the armchairs arranged to face each other, staring at the embers. His solitary figure contrasted sharply with the other nobles, who had gathered in cheerful little clusters around the room.

The man, unusually quiet and solemn, looked more handsome than usual, but Ophelia felt an inexplicable discomfort she couldn’t quite put into words. Normally, by now, their eyes would have already met long ago.…

…What am I even thinking?

Realizing her thoughts sounded exactly like those of a hopelessly tamed person, Ophelia tightly shut her mouth. She kept forgetting that emotions without clear justification were dangerous. It was becoming a rather serious problem.

Yet, when Ophelia walked over and sat in the chair opposite him, Idren immediately turned to look at her.

Ophelia deliberately avoided his golden eyes, warmed by the firelight. Though the heat in them likely came only from the flames, she didn’t want to risk feeling unsettled by looking into them.

Seeing her silently stare elsewhere, Idren asked,

“Is something troubling you?”
