And Rahelica felt a slight disillusionment toward herself. Must I, at my age, really be like this?

But this play had not two, but three characters. So from the moment she’d begun walking on two legs, she’d been involved to the point of exhaustion—there was no way out now.

“Huh? Give your seat to your father, Mother.”

When Iris sighed at her daughter’s whining—words unbefitting her age—Rahelica felt a faint pang of guilt toward Iris. She murmured inwardly, *I’m sorry for forcing you to face such an unpleasant sight.*

But if only Mother hadn’t chosen me, none of this would have happened.

Her two younger sisters, Talia and Helena, never had to do things like this. Whenever Rahelica had to put on shameless, childish coquetry from broad daylight onward, she became so envious of her younger sisters that it bordered on jealousy.

How was it that only those two could live their lives according to their age? Watching them made her feel utterly pathetic, as if her own desperate efforts for an ordinary life were nothing but misery.

Although their feelings seemed precisely opposite.

But what could she do? Rahelica did care for her two sisters, in her own way. It might have been a meager sense of guilt for watching them grow up under their indifferent mother’s unequal treatment, or perhaps something even lighter—a mere familial bond—but either way, it was enough for her, as their elder sister, to stay and try rather than run away.

When she looked up at her mother once more, Iris finally gave an order to the servant standing nearby.

“Go bring another chair.”

At those words, Lebenen’s expression visibly brightened. Rahelica smiled at Iris.

“Thank you, Mother.”

“Enough, Rahel. Where’s the mother who won’t grant her daughter’s request?”

But Mother, you didn’t even reply to Talia’s letter last week asking you to join her for dinner once.
