That night, Idren left her alone and did not return for a long time. Ophelia went to bed without waiting for him.

When she opened her eyes the next day, she saw fresh medicine applied to the wound on her leg. The injury had been treated in the same manner she had seen once before.

Still half-asleep, as she chewed her breakfast in bed, Idren—neatly dressed—spoke to her.

“Today, I’m afraid I must attend to our appointment alone. I have matters to handle.”

Ophelia nodded to the man who had completely changed his mind in just a day. Idren stared at her silently for a while before speaking again.

“It’s fine if I return a bit late.”

She had already intended to return whenever she pleased, with or without his saying so, but Ophelia chose not to correct him.

After finishing her meal, Idren waited until she was ready and then saw her off. He helped her into the carriage himself and said,

“Have a safe trip.”

Ophelia noticed he was unusually attentive today. Though he had always been the type to fuss over details, he seemed overly so this time.

But before she could say anything, Idren closed the carriage door.

Inside the slowly departing carriage, Ophelia watched the knights galloping alongside at the same pace. Their faces were unfamiliar, none clearly remembered.

Since she was supposed to meet Netepel aboard a ship, the carriage halted at the dock. One of the knights Idren had assigned helped her down from the carriage.

At the dock lay the ship Netepel had sent. From that vessel—adorned with silk and flowers—stepped the attendant she had seen the previous day, the man who claimed to be Netepel’s servant.

“Once again, Your Highness.”
