Of course, it was a lie.

Including her previous marriage, Ophelia had mentioned Mahanas so rarely that one could count the instances on one hand—and even those had all been unavoidable situations.

Back then, Idren had simply assumed she spoke little of him because they weren’t close, since he’d believed Ophelia had good relations with her family.

It turned out she’d actually despised them.

Idren thought that if Ophelia had been present just now, she might have strangled him for his pointless remarks. Her temperament certainly allowed for it.

But Taelan, who knew little of Ophelia, seemed to take his words at face value.

Since he had caused quite a commotion to marry Ophelia, he probably believed repaying her brother’s debts would be more than sufficient—and then some.

Taelan relaxed his stiff expression and spoke.

“Oh, it seems Her Royal Highness the Princess was quite worried. In fact, there is a related matter entangled in this. Would you like to see the ledger?”

Idren nodded at the appropriate suggestion. Taelan gave an order to the boy waiting by the wall.

“Go to my study and bring back the ledger containing transactions with His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Reden.”

“Are the debts so large that you keep a separate ledger?”

“They won’t seem significant to Your Highness, though they were substantial for the prince… given the vast difference in your fortunes. I merely kept a separate ledger because our transactions were frequent.”

Then Taelan glanced sideways at him, apparently worried Idren might be shocked by the amount.

Having witnessed Mahanas’s reckless spending in his past life, Idren was confident nothing Taelan could show would surprise him—but he stayed silent. There was no need to correct Taelan’s assumptions if he was already drawing his own conclusions.
