Soon, a knight arrived, dragging Dares bound by rope.

Ophelia stood before her father, who had been forced to kneel before her. Placing her foot on his thigh, she leaned forward and whispered into the trembling old man’s ear.

“Father, I do not believe in gods.”

If she had to believe in something, she would trust people—and if she had to trust people, she would trust only herself. That logic was her creed, her religion.

Dares should have died happily—for now he could pass away in peace.

Had his words seemed false, Ophelia would have flayed every inch of his skin to uncover the truth.

Having finished her confession—not a sinner’s penance, but that of an unbeliever—Ophelia gestured to Hazelle, who had been waiting beside her. The perceptive knight dragged the aged king down from the platform and delivered him to the woman standing below.

Ophelia addressed the woman, who stared at the enemy placed before her with disbelief in her eyes:

“Kill him.”

“What?”

“You’ve been itching to kill him, haven’t you? Do it now.”
