After a silence that seemed to catch her breath, Ophelia spoke.

“I still can’t understand you.”

“I won’t ask you to understand me.”

He had already been far too greedy. Idren knew this was the utmost their relationship could bear.

“There must surely be someone better than me for you.”

“Perhaps so.”

Of course, he didn’t think that himself, but he had no reason to argue against Ophelia’s repeated assertions. Even without fighting her, Idren could explain why it had to be her.

“But among them, there’s no one I want.”

“The day will come when you’re disappointed in me.”

“Haven’t I already disappointed you?”

This foolish, naive, exasperating man. Ophelia silently repeated to herself what she wanted to say to the man standing firmly just a step behind her, answering back without yielding. What good did it do to pretend to be weak or feisty? In the end, he was still clinging to this losing situation.

“How did we end up like this?”

Just a few years ago, they hadn’t been this way at all. She didn’t know what Idren from her previous life had thought, but at least Ophelia could say that things had been better then—when she bore no responsibilities and cared about nothing.
