Hearing those words, Masaran immediately took off.

He and his father had been on bad terms lately anyway. His father, who had disliked him his entire life, even from his bed, received full reports on everything happening in the court.

Every time his father acted like that, Masaran felt as though he was being compared to his eldest brother. And that was despite Hathor already being dead.

Everyone around him kept seeking only his deceased brother. Right now, even on the streets, the entire nation mourned the death of the first prince, and all the ministers rolled their eyes, searching for ways in which he fell short of his brother—though no amount of comparison would ever bring back someone already gone.

The second prince was the only person who offered him comfort among all those people.

After all, hadn’t he suffered similar discrimination himself?

Masaran knew this because the second prince had confided in him personally: the reason he’d been exiled from the homeland was that he’d challenged his half-brother, the crown prince.

Of course, a gap existed between the second prince and the crown prince—their mothers’ statuses—but Masaran decided to pretend ignorance of that matter for now. Questions of legitimacy or bastardy were ultimately private family affairs. Rather than digging up every detail and awkwardly forcing sides, it was better to focus only on what he could empathize with.

In any case, what truly mattered was that the second prince was practically his only close friend.

So why on earth had his father summoned him? Masaran felt as if his father was deliberately trying to take away the one remaining source of comfort he had left. After all, hadn’t his father always disapproved of every aspect of him? It seemed entirely plausible.

Standing before his father’s sickroom, which he’d reached at a quick pace, Masaran saw the second prince’s attendant waiting there. Masaran brushed past the attendant—loyal to his master but never particularly friendly—and stood right before the chamber door.

“Don’t announce my arrival.”

He ordered the guard who’d just noticed him and was about to pull the cord connected to the room inside.

Had it been any other day, the guard would have haughtily declared his loyalty to the king and pulled the cord anyway—but now, with the current king on his deathbed and the crown prince already fallen in battle, it was clear who held real power in the palace. Thus, the guard withdrew his hand from the cord.

Masaran carefully opened the door and stepped inside. Fortunately, the bed was positioned such that its occupant couldn’t see the entrance, so he wouldn’t be discovered.
