“Miss Somerset, Uncle and I saw the sheep here. We even fed them and petted them. At first, I was scared… No, not scared—just nervous—but once I gathered my courage, it turned out to be nothing at all. What surprised me more was that I’d expected their wool to be fluffy and soft like cotton candy, but it was stiffer than I thought.”

Jacqueline couldn’t quite collect herself at Benjamin’s unusually chatty behavior. Still, she didn’t forget to offer a gentle smile.

“Is that so? Sounds like you had fun.”

“Yes, Miss Somerset!”

“Don’t forget today’s lesson, dear. Truthfully, most things in life aren’t so different from this. They seem frightening and nerve-wracking beforehand, but once you actually do them, they’re often nothing special.”

“That really does seem true!”

She naturally took Benjamin’s hand and cast a surprised glance toward Windsor. Their eyes met, and he gave a brief, indifferent nod.

“How did you end up here…?”

“Benjamin mentioned the sheep at Southfield, so…”

Uncharacteristically, Windsor let his sentence trail off.

Finding this very odd, Benjamin tilted his head in confusion. Then, recalling what his uncle had just said, he tilted his head the other way.

Though Jacqueline had stepped away, the boy had quietly been reading a book. After all, it wouldn’t befit the heir of the Preston family to slack off on his studies simply because his tutor was absent.

It was none other than his uncle who had told the boy to prepare to go out. Benjamin had followed Windsor without understanding why, and only learned their destination once they’d boarded the train.

Yet now Windsor was making excuses for her. Benjamin, who had been about to correct the inaccurate statement, closed his mouth. His uncle’s expression was far too serious.

Windsor studied Jacqueline’s face intently, as if trying to dissect every emotion hidden within.
