Jacqueline stopped mid-step on the staircase. Windsor, who had been looking down at his tautly stretched dressing gown, now looked up at her standing two steps below.

“What is it this time?”

“Benjamin.”

“…….”

“I need to go see Benjamin.”

Windsor slightly furrowed his brow at the sudden mention of his nephew’s name, his expression clearly baffled—as if he couldn’t possibly understand why she needed to see the boy at this hour.

She was still as unpredictable as popcorn about to pop.

Jacqueline hurried forward. She quickly overtook Windsor but only halted when she noticed her own gown pulling taut.

Then she turned back to look at Windsor, who still stood rooted in place. This time, from two steps above, she urged him onward.

“I told you, I need to go see Benjamin.”

“…….”

Apparently, she had no intention of going alone. As soon as Windsor took a step, she started walking again.

“Benjamin might be scared.”

“Scared of thunder this mild? Benjamin is the heir to the Preston family.”

“My lord, as you well know, being the Preston heir has absolutely no bearing on whether one fears thunder.”

“That’s not what I meant. Benjamin has taken science lessons—he knows thunder is merely an electrical discharge caused by atmospheric instability. If I recall correctly, that was covered during the sixth tutor’s lessons.”

Jacqueline froze.

She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned back. Her voice suddenly sharpened.

“Oh, I’d momentarily forgotten—you’re always so precise about everything, Lord Preston.”

Windsor couldn’t fathom why she was upset, nor had he anticipated this shift. All he could do was yield to the storm raging around him.

Jacqueline began walking again. The gown she held tugged taut once more. She whipped her head around and glared at Windsor.

Are you coming or not?

Her silent reproach struck him. As he took another step, Jacqueline snapped back petulantly,

“My lord, your imagination is truly lacking. Doesn’t thunder sound like a monster’s roar to you? Don’t you feel that terrifying dread that lightning might strike right above your head? Doesn’t it make you want to confess sins you’ve never even committed?”

“We’re not stranded at sea with nowhere to run—we’re in Preston Manor. The likelihood of lightning striking your head is exceedingly low. This is a stone-built house: extremely sturdy and impervious to lightning. In other words, there’s no safer place than right here.”

“That’s exactly my point.”

Jacqueline let out an exasperated sigh at that. Having given up on reasoning with a man governed entirely by logic and facts, she muttered wearily,

“Even if it’s not the open sea… I can still be scared.”

“Are you speaking for yourself, Miss Somerset?”

At those words, Jacqueline flinched as though struck right in the chest. Uncharacteristically hesitant, she stammered an excuse.

“I don’t mean me… I mean Colin. That bear doll we saw before—it’s in Benjamin’s room. Colin is terribly afraid of thunder. I just wanted to check if he’s sleeping peacefully.”

Though her excuse was flimsy, Windsor didn’t press her on it. As Jacqueline walked a step ahead, still clutching his gown, she kept glancing back occasionally—

as if to confirm that the person she held onto was truly Windsor Preston.

“Don’t you ever lie awake before bed pondering the mysteries of the universe, Lord Preston? The afterlife, perhaps? Or maybe some embarrassing memory from your past? Or… your future as a sudden-rich man? …Ah, right—you’re already filthy rich.”

She awkwardly tacked on that last remark to herself, then concluded with a brisk, “Anyway.

For Benjamin, this is a time when imagination runs wild.”

At that, Windsor arched an eyebrow, still clearly perplexed.

“That’s inefficient behavior. Bedtime is scheduled, and getting proper rest during that time is far more productive than wasting it on pointless fantasies.”

“Oh, yes—of course. I’d momentarily forgotten again just how precise you are about everything, Lord Preston.”

Jacqueline grumbled, her voice sharp once more—then suddenly lowered it. She brought her index finger to her lips.

“Shh.”

They had unknowingly arrived before Benjamin’s door. She took a quiet breath and carefully pushed the handle.

“…….”

Through the widening gap of the silently opening door, the shadow-drenched room came into view.

It was quiet. Everything was in its place, and the child lay perfectly still in bed—likely deep in slumber.

“He must be asleep.”

Jacqueline whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the rain but carrying a faint note of relief. Windsor replied matter-of-factly, “He was probably tired.”

“Sleep well, Benjamin,”

she offered affectionately as she began closing the door.

Boom! Crash!

Once again, the world lit up. The daylight-bright instant vanished, and darkness swallowed everything anew.

“…….”

Both Jacqueline and Windsor couldn’t tear their eyes away from the bed. There, hunched over and trembling, was a small back clutching the bear tight.

The child had buried his face into Colin’s belly and flinched violently with each thunderclap.

“…Don’t… be scared, Colin. I’m here…”

His fragile voice, on the verge of tears, barely reached them.

Windsor’s expression vanished completely. He stared fixedly at Benjamin—as if observing some utterly unfamiliar, alien object.

Then Jacqueline quietly shut the door again. While Windsor looked on in confusion, she knocked.

Knock knock knock.

Afraid her voice might be drowned out by the rain, she called out louder than usual.

“Benjamin, it’s me. May I come in if you’re awake?”

“…Yes, Miss Somerset.”

A composed reply came from inside—though it was clearly feigned.

Jacqueline counted silently to three before finally opening the door. Benjamin sat stiffly upright in bed, his face rigid as he greeted her.

Boom.

The sky roared violently once more. At the fearsome, monster-like sound, the boy’s shoulders twitched.

Yet Benjamin bit his lips, pretending not to be startled, and kept staring straight ahead. Jacqueline walked toward the bed and whispered gently,

“Colin gets scared of thunder. I came to see if he’s sleeping well.”

“Um… he won’t be scared since I’m here with him.”

Benjamin answered, gripping Colin’s paw tightly. It wasn’t just her imagination—the fist hidden in the darkness appeared to tremble.

“You see, Colin is more of a coward than he looks. So…”

Jacqueline paused briefly there and turned to look behind her. The boy’s gaze followed hers.

Only then did Benjamin notice there was another person standing in the shadows.

“Lord Preston has agreed to stay with you until morning.”

“…Uncle…?”

The boy’s eyes widened in disbelief—and Windsor was just as surprised. He frowned faintly and looked at Jacqueline.

“Isn’t that right, Lord Preston?”

“You can’t possibly mean because of thunder. As I just said, thunder is merely…”

“For heaven’s sake, just shut that mouth of yours.”

Jacqueline’s voice remained low, but her face was still smiling—though her eyes were absolutely not.

Windsor couldn’t predict her, but one thing was certain: if he shook his head now, a furious storm would surely break loose.

This was her final warning.

“…….”

Slowly, Windsor nodded. His gaze now turned to his young nephew. The heir to the Marquessate of Preston met his eyes in the darkness and straightened his shoulders.

“Oh, I’m not scared of thunder at all, Miss Somerset, so I’d be fine by myself.”

Just as Windsor expected—Benjamin had taken science lessons; of course he wouldn’t fear mere thunder.

Calmly, Windsor began, “If I’m truly unnecessary…”

“But Colin is scared of thunder, so having Uncle here would really help him feel safe.”

Benjamin quickly added the last part, afraid Windsor might turn and leave immediately. Jacqueline, holding the oil lamp close to her face, shot him a sharp glare—

making her angry expression perfectly clear.

Windsor walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed. As if she’d never glared at all, Jacqueline whispered to Benjamin in a soothing tone,

“Now that Lord Preston is here, Colin won’t be scared anymore. So Benjamin, don’t worry—sleep peacefully.”

“Yes, Miss Somerset.”

Benjamin rustled as he slipped back under the covers. Lying on his back and staring at the ceiling, he slowly turned toward Windsor.

After several attempts to fall asleep, Benjamin cracked his eyes open again.

“Uncle?”

“Speak.”

Only after confirming Windsor’s dark silhouette was still there did the boy sigh in relief.

After that, Benjamin called his name several more times—still with no real request.

Windsor didn’t understand why—but perhaps it was for a reason similar to why Jacqueline had shoved the oil lamp so close to his face earlier.

Jacqueline had been right. His young nephew was afraid of thunder.

Had he forgotten everything taught by his sixth tutor?

Windsor pondered it carefully—but found no answer. Meanwhile, the boy’s breathing had grown even and steady.

Jacqueline, who’d been standing watch by the bedside, silently tugged at the corner of her lips. She gently pulled the slipped blanket up to his neck.

Colin, please take good care of Benjamin in my place.

She whispered softly, then straightened her bent back and bid Windsor farewell.

“Well then, have a good night, Lord Preston.”

“Thanks to you, I suppose I will. Tomorrow promises to be an exhausting day.”

“When Benjamin becomes Marquess of Preston, the memory of tonight will protect him.”

Suddenly, Windsor’s gaze drifted toward the bed. To his unusually sharp eyes, a pale silhouette was visible in the darkness.

The memory of tonight would protect the future Marquess of Preston?

Jacqueline, having thrown that question into Windsor’s mind, left the room without the slightest hesitation—as if his inner turmoil meant nothing to her.

Only belatedly did Windsor’s eyes follow her shadow. As she stepped into the hallway, she paused.

Boom.

The sky continued its discontented wailing, and the pitch-black corridor looked like the gaping maw of a monster.

At that moment, Jacqueline became either a young girl walking willingly into the monster’s belly—or a princess who had barely escaped from it.

“Hmm…”

She spun around lightly. The door clicked shut behind her. Windsor watched as she tiptoed toward him and raised an eyebrow.

My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband

This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.

The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.

They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.

In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.

When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.

She makes his life a living hell.

And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.

Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!

Intro

Dong Xia lost her memory.

Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”

Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.

…

The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.

She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.

Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.

No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!

Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂

*

Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.

The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.

In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.

The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.

And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.

Notes:

1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.

2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
