Snap. Tap-tap.

A cold sound came from Jacqueline’s fingers. Elizabeth’s face flushed red with anger.

“You—this—Jac—!”

“As you well know, I’ve got no honor left to lose. If you really want, I could yank your hair out right this very moment. Shall we begin?”

At those words, Elizabeth hesitated for the first time. She knew better than anyone that Jacqueline was the type who followed through on her words.

“I’ll give you one last piece of advice, Liz—don’t make Uncle Walter sad.”

“Don’t you dare interfere in our father’s affairs!”

Elizabeth snapped back coldly, then took a deep breath, swallowing down the rage that had surged all the way to her throat.

It had been the same at Bristol Girls’ Boarding School. Out of consideration for Walter, Jacqueline had ignored Elizabeth’s provocations and kept her frustration bottled up.

But once she reached her limit, she’d issue a chilling warning—and inevitably force Elizabeth into submission.

Whether it was pulling her hair or challenging her to a duel in the gymnasium, she had plenty of methods.

Yet Jacqueline was adored by friends and teachers alike. Elizabeth deeply resented how Jacqueline received everyone’s attention without even trying.

Samantha sneered, “Why does she keep picking fights when she never wins?”

Elizabeth shot her a sharp glare, then clenched her teeth and said,

“Just you wait, Jacqueline. I won’t let this go.”

“Anyone watching might think I started the trouble, Liz.”

Elizabeth abruptly turned her back, then descended the stairs with elegant grace, as if she’d never been angry at all.

Victoria, who had been watching the two of them in turn, quickly called out, “I’m coming with you, Liz!” and hurried after her. Samantha snorted dismissively.

“Honestly, who even knows who’s whose maid anymore? Victoria graduated ages ago—why’s she still trailing after Elizabeth like a shadow?”

Jacqueline tore her gaze away from Elizabeth’s retreating figure—escorted by her fiancé toward the center of the hall—and turned to Samantha.

“I need to go find Benjamin. I’m not done with my work yet.”

Work.

At that word, Samantha’s smile awkwardly froze, but she soon nodded.

“Alright. Now that I know you’re here, I’ll come find you again. Don’t pretend you don’t know me just because I’m being a nuisance.”

“Of course I wouldn’t, Samantha. You’re my dearest friend.”

“And I’m yours, Jackie. I’ve missed you so much all this time.”

Jacqueline gave a gentle smile and left the spot, feeling unusually shabby about herself today of all days.

The moment she stepped out of the banquet hall, the faint smile clinging precariously to her lips vanished without a trace.

“Whew.”

A long-held sigh escaped her. Her shoulders, tightly tensed until now, drooped like waterlogged cotton.

Recalling Elizabeth’s final words, Jacqueline gave a light shrug.

“Looks like I’ve turned another small enemy into a big one. At this rate, I’m hardly fit to give Lord Preston advice.”

Smiling sheepishly, she headed straight for Benjamin’s playroom, picturing the boy’s beaming face as he unwrapped the birthday gift from Lord Preston.

Right now, she needed a little comfort—and his smile would be enough to soothe her.

“Huh?”

But waiting for her there was Benjamin, his face gloomy.

“Kraaah!”

“No, you shouldn’t run around inside the—”

“What is this? Ugh, boring!”

“No, that’s my book—”

“Bahahaha! What’s this drawing? It’s hilarious! Even my little brother could draw better than this.”

“No, that belongs to Miss Somerset—”

Crash! A tremendous racket rang out. About a dozen children were tearing around the room, shrieking wildly like unbridled colts.

Benjamin stood frozen in place, watching in despair as his room descended into chaos. The nannies huddled in a corner, gossiping with no interest in the commotion.

Huuuuh.

Jacqueline took a deep, deep breath, filling her lungs completely—then shouted with all her might.

“Everyone, quiet!”

“!”

The children, who had been darting about just moments before, suddenly froze. After glancing around with wide eyes, they finally spotted Jacqueline standing at the doorway.

The nannies’ gazes snapped toward her too. Recognizing her belatedly, they wore odd, uneasy expressions.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

The burliest child among them jutted out his lip.

“What? It’s just the governess.”

“You should call her Miss Somerset, Oakley,” Benjamin retorted, as if arguing the point.

But Oakley only grew more arrogant.

“Still just a governess. Our governess doesn’t dare disobey a word I say.”

That was only natural—after all, Oakley was the son of a viscount, and his governess was merely the daughter of a baronial family whose title held little meaning now.

“!”

Benjamin bit his lower lip. Clenching his tiny fists as if personally insulted, he glared fiercely at Oakley. His small hands trembled visibly.

Seeing this, Jacqueline offered a resigned smile. Even this furious, helpless child was a comfort to her.

Today, let’s make another small enemy into a big one. Let’s mark it as a special occasion.

Entertaining this absurd thought, she slowly stepped forward. Oakley, watching her approach, curled one side of his lip—clearly thinking she couldn’t possibly do anything to him.

“Haah.”

I can’t actually fight a child.

Barely keeping her composure, Jacqueline placed a hand on Benjamin’s shoulder. The boy, who looked ready to charge, flinched slightly.

She gently patted his shoulder—her way of saying, “Leave this to me.”

Then she walked past him and took a few more steps. Oakley lifted his chin haughtily; the nannies still showed no sign of intervening.

“Hmph!”

Suddenly, Jacqueline reached out. Oakley flinched—but her hand wasn’t aimed at him, but at the table beside him.

She picked up a box filled with candies and slowly pulled her hand back.

“You’d best not try bribing me with sweets. My house has far better candy than this.”

Embarrassed at having flinched, Oakley puffed out his chest and jeered boastfully.

Jacqueline didn’t look at him—instead, she scanned the other children. Their eyes sparkled with curiosity, eager to see what would happen next.

“Now, listen carefully to what I’m about to say.”

“…….”

“Everything in this room belongs to Benjamin. You must always ask permission before touching anything. I expect young ladies and gentlemen to remember who owns this room and show proper manners.”

“It’s not even worth much. If I ask Father, he’ll buy me as many as I want.”

Oakley sneered again. Jacqueline pretended not to hear and continued.

“From now on, every well-behaved child will receive one piece of candy.”

“We don’t need to listen to some governess like you! I’ll give you better candy myself.”

“The candy I give isn’t for eating—it’s for collecting.”

“For collecting?”

A little girl holding a doll asked, her eyes gleaming with interest. Jacqueline smiled warmly at her.

“Yes. You collect them diligently.”

“Why?”

“Because the child who collects the most candy today will receive an amazing gift when it’s time to go home.”

“The winner?”

“What kind of amazing gift?”

A boy with a missing front tooth stepped forward eagerly. The children were already completely captivated by Jacqueline’s words.

After all, they were just children.

Using the same charm she’d once used to coax the composed Benjamin, Jacqueline effortlessly enchanted these even less patient youngsters.

“I’ll give you an even better gift!”

Oakley shouted in panic—but his words no longer reached their ears.

What mattered now was becoming first among the twelve children, and that tapped perfectly into their competitive spirit.

Clack-clack. Jacqueline opened a jar and took out a yellow candy, then handed it to a quiet little girl standing in the corner.

“This is for listening carefully. So far, you’re in first place.”

“…First place.”

The boy with the missing tooth watched enviously, then suddenly raised his arm high. He’d been called Justin downstairs.

“What about me? I listened carefully too!”

“Well, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to decide that.”

“But what’s the gift?”

“It’s a secret. But I’ll tell you this—it’s one of Benjamin’s most treasured possessions.”

“Really?”

“Wow!”

Benjamin, who had been wearing a sullen expression, involuntarily nodded when Jacqueline winked at him. He worried about which treasure she might give away—but couldn’t bring himself to object.

Surely it wasn’t the birthday gift from Uncle? Ah, no, it couldn’t be.

While Benjamin shook his head quietly, the children surged toward Jacqueline, firing questions.

“How do we get candy?”

“I want candy too!”

“Give me just one! No, ten!”

Looking into ten pairs of sparkling eyes, Jacqueline declared firmly,

“First, clean up the things you’ve scattered.”

“Yes!”

The children immediately returned everything they’d thrown or played with to its proper place. Jacqueline moved around the room, handing out one candy at a time to each child diligently tidying up.

“Good. Put this book back on that shelf.”

“I put all the paints away! Can I have a candy?”

“Here you go.”

“Thank you!”

No matter how unruly they were, they were still children—just as Benjamin, no matter how mature, was still only six.

Everyone except Oakley received a candy. Clenching his empty fists, Oakley sulked, his face turning red and then pale.

Jacqueline spoke calmly.

“Now I’m going to read you a fairy tale. The child who listens the most attentively will get a candy.”

“Me! Me!”

“No! I’ll listen!”

In the blink of an eye, the children formed a circle around Jacqueline. She carefully selected a storybook and sat down on a chair.

The children crouched in front of her. Even Benjamin took a seat beside her, leaving Oakley standing alone.

Jacqueline gave Oakley a kind smile.

“You can get candy too, Oakley—if you listen carefully.”

“!”

Oakley, who’d assumed he was already on Jacqueline’s bad side, widened his eyes in surprise. With a reluctant shuffle, he pushed through the gathered children and claimed the front seat for himself.

“Once upon a time…”

Jacqueline’s soft voice filled the room. The children held their breaths, hanging on every word.

The sudden quiet startled the nannies—they stared at Jacqueline with disbelief and astonishment.
