Jacqueline tightly pressed her lips together and fiddled absentmindedly with her teacup. For some reason, her chest felt oddly tight—

as if someone had seized her heart in a firm grip, or perhaps pricked it sharply with a needle again and again.

Unconsciously, Jacqueline grimaced. Only much later did she realize that what she felt was sadness.

Just then, the drawing-room door opened, and Benjamin entered. Jacqueline quickly put on a cheerful expression to greet the boy.

“Good morning, Benjamin. Did you sleep well?”

“Yes, Miss Somerset. Good morning, Uncle.”

Having given a polite greeting, Benjamin walked steadily over to the sofa and sat down beside her, his short legs dangling in the air.

As she always did every morning, Jacqueline poured milk for him. Benjamin, eyes still hazy, picked up the cup and brought it to his lips, staring blankly into space.

As he gulped down the milk, his eyes gradually regained focus.

“Haaah.”

With a little white milk mustache on his upper lip, Benjamin set down his half-empty cup and looked up at Jacqueline with sparkling eyes.

“Good morning, Teacher.”
