Benjamin’s wake-up time was consistent. It was because Windsor preferred a disciplined lifestyle. He believed habits shaped one’s attitude, and that attitude cultivated mental fortitude.

He often said that consistent, repeated actions every day ultimately determined a person’s life. Benjamin didn’t fully grasp the meaning behind those words, but by now, he had grown quite accustomed to rising early in the morning.

Before he began living with his uncle—that is, back when his father was still alive—he wouldn’t open his eyes until noon. Of course, he had been younger then and needed more sleep.

Moreover, the boy’s father rarely left his bed for most of the day. There had been no one to scold Benjamin, and no one ever complained, even when the boy lazed about.

But ever since he started living with Windsor, Benjamin woke up at seven o’clock sharp. Otherwise, Windsor would come to wake him himself.

Even in his sleep, Benjamin could sense a chill in the air; when he slowly opened his eyes, stoic Windsor would already be standing beside his bed. His heart would then thump heavily and drop like a stone.

Thus, Benjamin developed the habit of snapping his eyes open at exactly seven. Besides, Windsor rose far earlier than he did, so there was no chance to complain.

“All done.”

With Madam Ritz’s help, Benjamin changed his clothes and headed to the morning room. Windsor was already seated on the sofa, reading a newspaper. The boy offered him a composed greeting.

“Did you sleep well, Uncle?”

Windsor, who had likely known Benjamin was approaching—perhaps even since he stepped into the hallway—finally looked up from his newspaper and turned his head.

“Good morning.”

“Yes.”

Benjamin walked to his usual seat and sat down, sliding all the way back until his bottom pressed against the chairback. His legs dangled high above the floor.
