“Since before, I’ve been unlucky.”

I muttered softly, resting my cheek on the desk. They say the more you talk, the better you get at it. But if I were to say such things in front of others, they would look at me strangely, so I often talked to myself when alone.

Ever since being hung by an edict from His Majesty and reopening my eyes, I found myself as Blanche Loa Vandaleur, the youngest princess of the Kingdom of Ramore.

Given the existence of a biography about Yi Baek Yeon, it wasn’t a dream or fantasy; it was reincarnation, with all my memories intact.

I had seen people in my previous life who had reincarnated with memories of their past lives, so it wasn’t too surprising to start a new life. Maybe it runs in the bloodline.

What really surprised me was how similar this life was to my previous one.

Blanche Loa Vandaleur, although the youngest princess of Ramore, isn’t a direct descendant of the royal family. Meaning, she was adopted from a collateral branch.

Yi Baek Yeon, too, was a collateral branch member of a noble family, adopted by the head of the family. Both were adopted not out of pity for the orphaned children but for their usefulness, to be utilized until they served their purpose.

Yi Baek Yeon was taken by a childless head to be an heir because he was a smart orphan from a collateral branch, and Blanche…

Blanche is a princess used as a hostage.

To explain this ‘hostage princess’, one must first understand the position of the Kingdom of Ramore.

The Kingdom of Ramore is a small country sandwiched between the Empire of Retaile and the Kingdom of Cartiane. It’s almost suspicious that it still maintains its nationhood, probably because both major powers are keeping it untouched as a buffer state.

Absorbing Ramore would mean sharing a border, which would multiply defense costs. Neither Retaile nor Cartiane would want to risk that, unless they’re declaring war.

“It’s truly a dilemma…”

Located between two great powers, not being conquered has its geographical advantage, but it also means having to cater to both sides simultaneously. It might even be easier to be annexed by one of them.

And this is precisely why the King of Ramore adopted me. Retaile demanded a hostage, and he wasn’t willing to send his own precious offspring.

“I must have done something terribly wrong in my past life…”

Just like my previous life, the early years of this life are fraught with hardship. I lost my parents at two and was adopted as a hostage, neglected for a year since I was destined to leave soon.

Today, at just three years old, I have to leave my homeland for Retaile, likely never to return.

“I don’t want to live.”

Truly.

In my previous life, I did everything I could. I gave my all for my family and country. I suppressed personal grudges and didn’t hide my talents. Whether it was civil or military, wherever my abilities were needed, I went and did what I could.

I thought it would all turn out well.

“But it didn’t.”

I know how it ends when you endure and bear it. The reward for belittling myself and striving harder. I remember what that got me.

It won’t be any different this life. It will only get worse, no matter what I do.
“But I can’t even die…”

Rashly dying could mean starting a third life under even worse conditions, but the bigger problem is that I’m only three years old. It’s difficult for a three-year-old’s hands to tie a sturdy knot.

And there’s another thing…

“Princess, we’re ready to leave. I’ve come to escort you.”

Just as I was feeling down about my obvious failures, the awaited person arrived.

Tula Delota. She was my nanny, accompanying me to the royal palace after my parents passed away when I was two, and now again she would be crossing over to the Retaile Empire with me.

“Shall we go?”

I gazed intently at the child smiling warmly at me.

…Tula, she said I was like her daughter. I reminded her of her daughter, who died shortly after birth.

But it wasn’t just Tula who was reminded of a daughter. I was too. Tula reminded me of my daughter, the one I had to leave behind in my previous life. My daughter who had to take care of my suicide’s aftermath, losing her entire family at barely twenty.

Like the early fortunes of Yi Baek Yeon and Blanche, Tula and my daughter before my death were similar.

Not just in age, but in the risk they had to bear because of me, terribly so.

My daughter was endangered simply for being my daughter, falling out of His Majesty’s favor. Tula is risking leaving her beloved homeland and family, traveling to a faraway foreign land, just for being my nanny.

I chose suicide to protect my daughter as Yi Baek Yeon, and as Blanche, an orphan raised by a nanny since two, I couldn’t help but be drawn to this child.

It’s this child, who weighs on my mind, preventing me from ending this second life I never wished for. I can’t leave this child, who is like my daughter, without knowing what will happen to her after I die.

“Tula.”

So, before embarking on a long journey, I made one promise.

“Yes, Princess.”
